Committed: The Ties that Bond

with Angella Dykstra

I'm a mom of three, a professional accountant, and an amateur photographer and writer. I am not a marriage expert. But my husband and I take "Til death do us part" seriously, and here I'll be sharing how we keep our marriage strong while we both do that insane work-life juggle.

Check out my Work It, Mom! profile and my blog, Dutch Blitz.

Have you taken separate vacations?

My best girl and I are going on a road trip, just the two of us. First time we've travelled without the dudes. Brace yourself, Vancouver. We're coming to getchoo. My two sons are off at camp for this week (Six nights away from home!) and my husband is at that same camp as a volunteer doing handyman stuff. This is the first time that both boys have been away at camp — or anywhere — without their sister, so I proposed that she and I take a girls’ trip. We hopped in the van and hit the road.

We’re spending the week staying in the big city with grandparents and aunties and cousins and having a great time, just the two of us. It’s the first time that our family has taken separate vacations and I’m sure it won’t be the last. Don’t get me wrong - we would prefer to be all together - but this trip of ours is a lot more fun than staying home while the boys are having a week of adventure.

  • Yep. Often. It’s just worked for our family. Obviously we hope one day to take one with all of us, but for now, separate vacations are better than no vacations. :)

  • Yup, we have. In fact, last summer husband and both kids went to your environs (Summerland Waterfront Resort) without me, and this summer, I’m taking the kids to Whistler without husband. We are also doing a week altogether on the Island. Last summer, we went to the Maritimes and husband came for the first week, then flew home, and the kids and I stayed just the 3 of us for the second week (just the “3 of us” and about 30 other relatives who LIVE there….lol!). He gets 8 weeks of vacation and I only get 3 weeks, so it just makes sense for him to take off, solo, with the kids occassionally. AND, in 2009, I went to ON by myself for ten (glorious) days, and then in the summer, I went back to ON with just the kids for two weeks. I suspect I may need to take another trip to ON, solo, this fall to meet my new nephew. So yeah, we’re all good with going away solo, solo with kids, or all together. :)

  • The Mr. graciously uses one of his vacation days[and hotel points] to stay home with littlegirl while i go away on a girls’ weekend each year.

and generally, i’ll take her by myself to visit gramma/grampa or a friend of mine once or twice a year.

and The Mr. & i take a vacation away together once a year.

as for family vacations, unless you count family visiting/holiday excursions, we haven’t begun that yet, but will eventually now that she’s getting older. a few weeks ago, we made the trek to south FL to visit sisters. that was the biggest “vacation” we’ve taken…. but The Mr. asserts that a vacation with a 3 (4)year old is not a “vacation”
