Committed: The Ties that Bond

with Angella Dykstra

I'm a mom of three, a professional accountant, and an amateur photographer and writer. I am not a marriage expert. But my husband and I take "Til death do us part" seriously, and here I'll be sharing how we keep our marriage strong while we both do that insane work-life juggle.

Check out my Work It, Mom! profile and my blog, Dutch Blitz.

Are you a cuddler?

I am not a ‘touchy-feely’ person. Oh, I’ll hug friends when I haven’t seen them in awhile, and I hug my kids throughout the day, but I’m not overly affectionate. When we first got married, my husband would drive me a bit crazy because he is totally a ‘touchy-feely’ person. He’d come up next to me and rub my back, or rub my arms and I’d finally get him to knock it off already.

(Seriously. Standing behind me and rubbing my arms is in no way enjoyable for me. Hug me! Kiss me! Or, you know. Just don’t rub my arms.)

One thing that we do both enjoy is cuddling on the couch. Once the kids are in bed and we’ve finished work/cleaning up, we’ll settle in on the couch for a bit of T.V. (We love Craig Ferguson and both have crushes on him.) He’ll lay on the couch, and I’ll tuck myself under his arm, wedged between him and the back of the couch, with my head resting on his chest.

A study done by the University of Michigan says that cuddling leads to more conversation, which we’ve found to be true.

How about you? Are you a cuddler? Does your spouse rub your arms and make you threaten him with a wooden spoon?

  • Iam not a huggy person by nature. I grew up in a family that rarely hugged each other. But when I married my husband, his family were BIG huggers! So I learned to be a hugger. I read a book called the 5 Love -Languages , and “Touch” is one of the languages that some people respond to. My language is “Acts of service” and “Quality time ” So my suggestion is to find out what is your love -language and give me a BIG hug for this advice.LOL
