Committed: The Ties that Bond

with Angella Dykstra

I'm a mom of three, a professional accountant, and an amateur photographer and writer. I am not a marriage expert. But my husband and I take "Til death do us part" seriously, and here I'll be sharing how we keep our marriage strong while we both do that insane work-life juggle.

Birthday presents for your husband

My husband turns thirty-six one week from today and I have absolutely NO idea what to get him. I’ve told him as much, multiple times, and he’s told me that he will give me some ideas, multiple times. We’re now a week away and if I need to order something online, it’s down to crunch time. I’d hate to be wandering the aisles of the local drug store the day before his birthday in the hopes that I could find something that would “do.”

In theory, he should be easy to shop for. He likes to wear nice clothes, he’s an active guy, and he can do pretty much anything. Maybe that’s the problem — there are too many options. Or maybe it’s the fact that he knocks it out of the park every time he gets presents for me; I have performance anxiety.

Help me out here, friends. What is a great present to give your (or my) husband?

  • I have an idea, but it is useless. But it is good! Apparently there is a website where you can get a custom made dress shirt for a very reasonable price. But, I don’t know the website (my mom does and she’s on vacation) and you only have a week.

Let me follow with a question. I would like to get my husband such a shirt for his birthday. And then he could wear it to an upcoming function. Too selfish of me? He’s really hard to shop for.

  • Some random ideas:

    1. Laguiole Corkscrew. They are heirloom-quality and you could get it engraved
    2. Since he’s active, one of those wrist-watch devices with a barometer and pedometer and whatever.
    3. Icebreaker apparel-shirts, leggings, sweatshirts made from merino wool that don’t pick up odors. Pricey but really, really worth it. See amazon.
    4. Noise-cancelling headphones. These are amazing.
    5. Thirty six small individually wrapped presents. Makes a beautiful pile.
    6. A guitar. Who doesn’t love a beautiful guitar?
    7. Really comfy desk-chair
    8. A whittling kit.

    Doesn’t he read your column?
