Committed: The Ties that Bond

with Angella Dykstra

I'm a mom of three, a professional accountant, and an amateur photographer and writer. I am not a marriage expert. But my husband and I take "Til death do us part" seriously, and here I'll be sharing how we keep our marriage strong while we both do that insane work-life juggle.

Is marriage harder for celebrities?

I’m sure that you’ve read a hundred posts by now about the fact that Katie Holmes filed for divorce from Tom Cruise. There is much speculation about the why (Scientology weirdness being the main reason), but who really knows? Maybe he’s not the same smiling/happy guy he is for the public, or one hundred other possible reasons. Their impending divorce got me thinking about celebrity divorces in general.

The media likes to run with the idea that marriage is harder for celebrities. They have to be in the public eye, they may have conflicting work schedules, there is so much pressure.

I don’t think it’s any harder for them than it is for us mere mortals, honestly. We all live in communities where other people get to watch our marriage in action. If you live in a small community — as we do — everybody knows you.

Conflicting work schedules happen for my husband and I, as well as for many of our friends. It’s a fact of life if both spouses work.

As for the pressure … life is full of pressure. Pressure from our work, pressure from our families, pressure from our own expectations.

Marriage is hard, regardless of your social stature or celebrity status.

What do you think? Is marriage harder for celebrities?

  • I don’t think their marriage is any harder but I do think the scrutiny they live under, especially a double celeb couple, can take a different toll. All have family pressure, all have personal pressures, most have work pressures.
As embarassing as it might be in a small community to know the ladies down the street are sharing last night’s fight with the whole town, it is a whole other thing to have every moody moment captured and broadcast across the world in 30 seconds flat.
I think strong marriages can withstand it still, but I do tend to see those that seem most solid are those that stay out of the limelight as a couple as much as possible.

  • I think that yes, marriage is harder for celebrities. Yes, marriage is hard, no matter who you are, but throw in the scrutiny of the public eye, the pressure to be perceived as a success, the crazy travel schedules, and IMO, it’s just harder for sure. Same would be true of a high-ranking politician or anyone who has a very public life (professional sports players, for example). In some ways, “celebrities” have lives that are easier - lots of money at their disposable for example, but in my experience, the pressure at that level is definitely excessive. I have a couple of friends “in the biz” - at nowhere near the “celebrity” level we are talking about here but still….I get it. It’s a hard life to choose.
