Committed: The Ties that Bond

with Angella Dykstra

I'm a mom of three, a professional accountant, and an amateur photographer and writer. I am not a marriage expert. But my husband and I take "Til death do us part" seriously, and here I'll be sharing how we keep our marriage strong while we both do that insane work-life juggle.

Check out my Work It, Mom! profile and my blog, Dutch Blitz.

Would you break into your spouse’s Facebook account?

I have a half an hour commute each way to work and I often listen to the radio during the drive in order to catch up on some news/have a dance party during my drive. One of the segments of the morning show is where they take a question from their Facebook page and ask people to chime in. Up for discussion yesterday was when a girl called in about a guy who knew his ex-girlfriend’s Facebook login details and would periodically log in and check out what she was up to.

1. Why on Earth would he know her login details in the first place, and

2. Why has she not changed them?

Do you remember your first kiss?

I could talk about my first kiss EVER but it happened in the middle of a party when I was in ninth grade. I’d had a crush on Stephen for, oh, ever and we were talking and then he leaned in and kissed me and I thought it was so nice and fun and WAIT, I’ve NEVER DONE THIS BEFORE and WHAT IF I’M DOING IT WRONG? I pulled away, turned on my heel and ran home.

I clearly did it wrong.

Would you get plastic surgery?

I ran into an acquaintance last weekend whom I hadn’t seen in at least a year. We got caught up on the kids and work and then she said, “You look great!” I replied with, “So do you!” It’s true - she does look great. Per usual.

Another friend was with us and as we are all the same age we soon got honest about the wrinkles and most especially, those two stupid lines that the three of us have between our eyes. We also freely admitted that while we have all said that we would never have plastic surgery, using Botox to get rid of those lines was…tempting. I won’t actually do it (I think) but the thought of erasing them, if only temporarily, makes me ponder it.

More date night ideas

My friend Heidi shared a post in Google Reader titled, “52 Cheap Date Ideas.” Since my husband and I going on a MONTH since our last date night, thanks to a revolving door of viruses/sick kids, my interest was piqued. We’re going out tomorrow night for sushi (YAY!) but as the weather gets nicer and the chances of having kids on antibiotics gets smaller, I’m hoping to get back to our bi-weekly schedule of date nights and breaking out of the Costco/out for dinner rut that we tend to get into.

I’m definitely up for a wine tour or even going to play mini golf.

Do you guys have any fun date night ideas that you want to share?

What are you doing for Valentine’s Day?

My husband and I have never been big on celebrating Valentine’s Day, mostly because every day is a day of romance in our house.

I’m totally kidding.

I have to confess that when we were first married, we did have a bit of that feeling. What can I say? We were newlyweds. A bigger part of it, though, is just how commercial everything is. Pay double for flowers, buy a box of chocolates and a $5 card with cheesy words in in. Go out to dinner at a nice restaurant (if you can get a reservation) along with everyone else and pay for a babysitter and, and, and…

Did you pick out your engagement/wedding ring?

Categories: dating, marriage

I remember being a single lass and occasionally hearing stories from women I knew who had gone with their partner to pick out their engagement and wedding rings. THE HORROR.

But then I met Matthew and while I knew that I wanted a solitaire, do you have any idea how many different settings there are? Thousands, I’m sure, but all I know is that we went together to look and it took two full days of browsing until I found the one I knew was meant to be mine.

Do you ever meet your spouse for lunch?

This past January, I returned to work full-time and in September, my husband’s job went to three-quarter time (to go to full-time in the New Year). Throw in three kids (two in elementary school and one in preschool) and other external commitments and our lives are pretty hectic.

My husband and I aim to go on a date night every two weeks, but all of the things we have going on sometimes make that date night happen every three or four weeks. Better than never, yes, but certainly not often enough for my taste.

Date Night Makeover

Categories: dating, marriage

I am a huge proponent of having a regular Date Night, as those of you who read regularly can attest to. We aim for once every second week, though sometimes it’s longer than that. Or, in the case of last weekend, we had a date night on both Friday and Sunday (Friday was just us, Sunday was a friend’s birthday dinner)(Yes, that counts, because there was fifteen pounds of Alaskan King Crab and ever-flowing wine).

I have also been truthful here in saying that our date night can get pretty routine. Dinner (at the exact same restaurant) and Costco, anyone? Though I have to give us kudos not for going to dinner at the exact same restaurant again, BUT going…shopping at the mall instead of Costco. We know how to party.

When the kids are away…

This past weekend I drove the kids to their Grandma’s house for the second annual Week Of Attending VBS And Being Eight Hours Away From Mommy And Daddy. The kids traveled…really well, actually (I KNOW - not blog fodder AT ALL) and the night I spent there was pretty uneventful apart from the early-morning freak-out by my daughter because her brother was TOUCHING HER PILLOW.

Last year when the kids were gone my husband and I felt like we were swimming in circles. We’ve gone away without them a few times and being in a different locale with new things to do and see make it so that we miss them, but that we aren’t lost and floundering.

Do you fart in front of your significant other?

Categories: dating, marriage

I sat here and banged out a whole post about something that BUGS me and while it is probably a valid discussion, I glanced over at the calendar and realized that I may be a little bit sensitive due to hormonal reasons. Plus, it’s Friday. No need to be all deep and stuff.

While pondering what to write about, my husband decided to rip a big fart. This, of course, sent my kids into a flurry of giggles and they did their best to reciprocate. One succeeded - the other two just had to change their underwear. I kid! Maybe.
