Cornered Office

with Mir Kamin

I'm a freelance writer and mother of two working from home, which theoretically means I can set my own schedule so as to best accommodate my family. In reality, "flexible hours" often equals "working too much." Yes, I'm my own boss; no, that doesn't mean life is easy. It's hard to leave the office when you live there. But I love what I do and feel very lucky. And not just because I get paid to work in my pajamas.

Good morning! Today I’m more ready than usual, even, to celebrate all things Friday with a bit of distraction. Don’t ask. Just read!

Shall we start with revenge, a dish best served on eBay? (There’s still time left to bid!)

Or perhaps a great explanation of why I don’t go to the gym? (Okay, maybe technically the reason is “I’m lazy,” but c’mon, that sounds scary.)

I’m suddenly grateful for the polite people at my grocery store.

People say it’s hard to find quality childcare, but I disagree. (What, doesn’t that sound awesome? No? Bueller?)

The only thing better than having a blog is having a blog and a dorky spouse.

I don’t know about you, but I feel better already. Have a great weekend, everyone!

Goooood morning! Yet another week is drawing to a close, and all I can thinking is that tomorrow, I can sleep in. I think my body is trying to tell me something. If only I could figure out what it is…. (Oh, hush. Like you’ve been getting enough sleep.)

Shall we find some fun new reading this morning? Let’s!

I didn’t know how much I was craving a Domo cupcake until I saw them. (Scary! But yummy!)

Loralee is my kind of crafter. (Don’t worry; I won’t tell Utah.)

Jennie is about to have her first child, and now that I’ve seen what she does to her dog I’m a little concerned. (Kidding! Mostly!)

I used to secretly watch Beverly Hills, 90210, and I was sorry I missed the premiere of the new version. But after reading this synopsis I feel certain that the blog was more entertaining than the show.

Speaking of television, Heather has a few rules she’d like you to review. (You tell ‘em, Heather. TV viewing is serious business.)

And now I’m off in search of coffee. Have a great Friday, everyone!

Hellooooooo, Friday! Just in time—I fear this week was about to eat me alive. But now that it’s (almost) over it looks like I shall live to fret another day. Hooray! To celebrate, I think I shall cruise the blogs. (Oh, wait. I do that every Friday. Well, I’m nothing if not consistent.)

Jane is really enjoying her new neighbors. Sort of.

Amanda is recording precious moments with her toddler. The kind that involve bodily functions, of course.

Personally, I think it’s high time someone rewrote Desiderata.

Meanwhile, Debra’s learned some things I found quite profound.

Finally, if you haven’t checked out Nie Nie Day you must; there’s a link to the backstory, there, but in short this is a gigantic multi-blog auction to raise money for a family in need. Not only are there fabulous items to be had, it’s a great cause. Check it out.

Have a wonderful weekend, everyone!

Happy Friday! Another week (almost) come to a close, and another chance to justify spending a few minutes doing something other than working. Wooooo!

Let’s see what’s happening in blogland this week, shall we?

Elsewhere is just living her file. That’s right. You heard me.

Did you know Miss Doxie is back from hiatus? And how. Please enjoy this story about geese.

PunditMom knows who Obama will pick for vice-president. (Hint: He’s furry and refers to himself in the third person.)

If you’re a SciFi geek and/or a Trekkie and/or a fan of black velvet (?!), you must read this if you haven’t already.

I do love me some 5ives. I’m especially liking Five terrible fake Jane Austen novels.

And with that… I’ve given you five ways to waste a little time. Enjoy, and don’t forget to do a little work, too. Have a great weekend!

Gooooood Friday morning to you all! I saw Mamma Mia last night, and yes, I’m the last person on the planet to see it, but let’s just say that my toes are still tapping this morning.

Here’s a bit of reading to take you through the last barrier to the weekend. I recommend you pair it with a snack.

I recently discovered Five Husbands, and what does a woman need when she’s had five husbands? A wife. Obviously.

You might not want to drink the water in the blogosphere right now. I mean, take a look at Jonniker and Kira. I’m just sayin’.

No, really, you need to see Boba Fett recreate Flashdance. Trust me.

And do you need 10 Practical Uses for Psychological Research in Real Life? I’ll bet you do. (That one comes from the incomparable Guy Kawasaki, whom you should already have bookmarked because he finds the coolest stuff.)

Experiencing a bit of Olympics Fatigue? Go have a giggle about some of the stories we’re tired of hearing.

Have a great Friday, everyone!

Hey, did y’all miss me last week? Sorry about that. I hope you snuck in some time to read some new blogs, anyway, even though I wasn’t able to come suggest some for you. As for me, things are looking up, this week, and I’m ready to waste some time find some new reads.

Let’s get to it!

My kids went back to school yesterday (I know, I know; it’s early, I get it) and I am totally loving Lunch in a Box. Even though we don’t have a cool Bento Box to pack lunches in, I’m getting fabulous ideas over there. And once I’ve got lunch figured out, then I need to plan for dinner. Picky Palate to the rescue with fun ideas for feeding your family! Awesome. (I’m suddenly quite hungry….)

I used to cruise the personal ads for entertainment, but who has that kind of time? Fortunately someone has gone ahead and culled the best ones so that I don’t have to. Ha!

Do you love touching posts about marital bliss? How about when they involve hilarious malapropisms? Me, too.

And I guess maybe this isn’t technically a blog, but if you haven’t read it yet, you need to know 10 Readons It Would Rule To Date A Unicorn. Because it totally would, you know.

Have a great Friday and a relaxing weekend, everyone!

Goooood morning! My family and I are off on a brief jaunt, today, so that we can say we did something fun before summer’s over. I don’t know what they’re talking about—I like sitting here at my desk and reading blogs just fine. Ahem.

Just in case you’re not up for the extreme fun of hours in the car with kids this morning (hooray!), here’s some blogs to keep you busy:

I saw the American Girl movie yesterday, which features hobos, and now I see that BeTheBoy is apparently a hobo expert. How have I missed him all this time? Bookmarked!

Did you know you can make grown-up mac and cheese with brie? True story! (Stop drooling on your keyboard.)

This is the most fascinating set of pictures I’ve seen this year.

For every woman who ever loved Anne of Green Gables and who thinks literature didn’t exactly stop with her, go read this immediately.

Mmmmmm… cake. Even better? Cake Wrecks.

Enjoy the weekend, everyone!

Gooooood Friday morning! I’m in a ridiculously good mood, this morning, despite the early hour. I’m not entirely sure what that’s about, but I’m going to go with it. Grab a cup of coffee and get ready to have a few chuckles, won’t you?

If you’re not exactly a morning person, you should definitely start here.

It’s true that kids imitate everything we do. (More or less.)

Here’s how one working mama gives in to the moment.

Road rage is no laughing matter. Except when it yields a good blog post.

Sometimes I read something and feel like I’ve read it before, and then I realize I’m experiencing deja blog.

Have a wonderful weekend, everyone!

Happy Friday! Last night we had a rehearsal dinner, and tomorrow we have The Big Wedding. Let me tell you; there is nothing like watching other people orchestrate a wedding to make you seriously grateful to just be a guest. Amen.

Now, you just go read a few blogs this morning, with your coffee, and remember to be happy that you’re busy working instead of corralling bridesmaids or something.

I’m not a regular reader of Gawker, but I did get a kick out of their Fifteen Most Useless Internet Euphemisms.

Looking for a new photoblog? Stephanie Roberts just launched a new one that I’m digging.

Old McDonald had a farm, and on that farm he had a longsuffering mother.

mental_floss is always good for a diversion, and you know you’ll sleep better tonight knowing the origins of 10 favorite muppets. Trust me.

You’ll also feel better once you know how you’d rate as a 1930s wife. After you stop laughing, anyway.

Have a wonderful weekend!

Happy Independence Day to my fellow Americans! Hopefully, you’re off work and ready for some fun, today. But even if your day contains little more than a busy schedule of barbecuing and eating half a watermelon, there’s always time for a few blogs with your morning coffee….
