Family Craft Ideas

with Leah

I'm Leah--wife, mother, editor, writer, photographer, and rickrack apologist. There's craftiness in my DNA, but between the kids and my work and the house and the television and my blogs (http://www.agirlandaboy and http://www.workitmom.com/bloggers/workingonmotherhood, among others), I have to keep my projects quick and easy if I hope to finish them before my boys (born December 2008 and July 2012) graduate from college. You're a working mom and you're busy too, but if you still want to get your craft on, join me here for some fun projects!

Countdown to Christmas: 24 DIY Advent Calendars

As a kid, one of my favorite things about the holiday season was the homemade advent calendar my mom packed with all kinds of fun goodies and activities, one for each day leading up to Christmas. Now that I have my own kids, it’s still one of my favorite things, and although I won’t say no to a store-bought advent calendar full of tiny chocolates, I’ll always keep the tradition alive with a homemade version too.

I know we’re still a week out from Thanksgiving, but advent starts on December 1, sharp, so it’s time to get cracking on the gift that keeps on giving and giving and giving and giving…Here are 24 of my favorites:

Let’s start with some simple paper options:

1. Paper trees from Willowday (includes a free template!)

2. Envelopes on a wall from A Few Things from My Life

3. Paper shapes from Mikkamade (The instructions are in Italian, but the pictures illustrate the easy process)

4. Chalkboard tree from Big Box Detox

5. Snowflakes from Eighteen25

Boxes and other containers:

6. Mini-tree boxes from Oh Happy Day (free template!)

7. Red-nose animal boxes from A Bubbly Life

8. Glass jars from Brigitte (My German(?) isn’t good enough to translate the instructions, but it looks like what we have here is a collection of glass jars, each dipped in a shade of green paint.)

9. Embellished bags from The Marion House Book

Mini-containers:

10. Walnut shells from Sweet Paul

11. Magnetic tins from Twig and Thistle (free template!)

12. Matchboxes in a jar from Just a Girl

13. Snowmen garland from Whimsy Love

14. Muffin tin from Club Chica Circle

You guys know how I love my toilet paper tube crafts:

15. TP tree from Used Everywhere

16. TP elves from Pysselbolaget (free template!) (And you can practice your Swedish while you make these)

17. Tp tube house from Morning Creativity

Other favorites:

18. Spool kits from Just Something I Made (free template! and instructions on how to turn this into a gift)

19. Beer advent from Instructables (free template!) (This one is obviously not for the kiddies…)

20. Baby socks from Martha Stewart

21. Miniatures shelf from Lil Boo Blue

22. Bulletin board from Leelah Loves (free template!)

23. Tiny tissue paper punch-outs from Daisy Janie

24. Large tissue-paper punch board from You Are My Fave
