Turkey Sloppy Joes

My spouse is a typical “meat and potatoes” guy.  Eating red meat isn’t a healthy option every night so I’ve learned to adapt meals that satisfy his love of meat.  The trick?  I use ground turkey instead of ground beef.  With a flavorful sauce, the meat-lovers in your family will never know the difference.

I serve this meal with a hearty green salad, carrots and dip (for my carrot loving son), and store-bought, oven-baked fries.  A healthy meal that goes from pan to plate in 20 minutes.

Plus it only takes one pot - so the clean-up is a breeze too.

Turkey Sloppy Joes

Ingredients:

  • 1 lb ground turkey (you can use ground chicken or ground beef too)
  • 1 medium onion, diced
  • 1 green bell pepper, seeded and diced
  • 2 tablespoons poultry seasoning (if using ground beef, substitute for steak seasoning)
  • 1/2 cup Ketchup
  • 1/4 cup BBQ Sauce
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 2 tablespoons water
  • Package of  Whole Wheat hamburger buns

Cooking Instructions:

In a medium sized sauce pan, add 2 tablespoons of vegetable oil over med-high heat.  Add onion and peppers.  Cook for 3-5 minutes until tender.  Add ground turkey and seasoning.  Continue cooking for another 5 minutes.  Tip: Frequently stir the ground turkey in the pan to get a fine mince that is the perfect sloppy joe texture.  Add the ketchup, BBQ sauce, water, and tomato paste to the mixture.  Continue to cook uncovered for 10 minutes, stirring frequently.  Spoon the meat onto toasted hamburger bun.  Enjoy!

  • I like ground turkey in dishes like this. The fries? I dice fresh potatoes, spritz them with non-stick spray, and sprinkle them with seasoning salt, then bake for about 30 minutes, turning often so they don’t stick to the pan. I call them Mom’s Famous Home Fries. :)

  • Daisy - I do home fries soemtimes as well. But in the summer when my no-AC house is already hot, there is no turning on the oven. My mom used to make eggplant fries - she’d slice an eggplant into strips and fry in the wok. We kids loved ‘em and never knew the difference.
