If there was a Nobel Prize for multi-tasking, I’m positive a working mother would win every single year. Hands-down. We are the ultimate multi-taskers. We aren’t necessarily naturals at the multi-tasking game, but learn how to do it well to survive. It is technology that keeps us sane between corporate meetings, volunteering in classrooms, trying to be domestic goddesses and all that other stuff in between.
I am beyond lucky to be a 21st century working mother. Technology allows me to juggle the demands of my profession while still spending plenty of time with my little guy. My BlackBerry, laptop, and two dozen Wi-Fi spots around town make it possible to work from home, work from a coffee shop, even work during the carpool ride to home (no, I’m not driving).
I love that I can bank online, shop online, and, on one occassion, pay my parking ticket online. I can find new recipes without having to buy another cookbook. I can send an Instant Message to my boss about our 1:1 nd in the next minute send an IM to my spouse about pick-up time.
Sometimes too much of a good thing isn’t good; however “too much” technology has become MY liberator. It frees me from the confines of my desk and makes the world my office. That is, until dinner… when all BlackBerries in the house go on mandatory vibrate.
What are some of your favorite things in technology?
I have to say I love my iPhone, and just discovered new parenting-friendly apps through Beth. iWant or goodfoodnearby, something like that, and games to entertain them in line. Having a cell phone and laptop meant I might have to work for a small portion of my vacation, but then I didn’t have to take vacation days. Or I could take off for kindergarten graduation since I could work at night. It does get to be too much sometime, but I agree, it’s helpful.
