It’s not like I didn’t know January 1st was coming.
First of all, it happens every single year at the exact same time. And if that isn’t enough (because I forget lots of things that happen at the exact same time every year), there is a massive world wide countdown to its arrival.
10… 9… 8…
What? It’s 2011? It’s been 2011 for five days and I still haven’t taken the time to make a single resolution or goal for the New Year?
Well, crap.
I could say that I don’t make yearly resolutions. I could tell you that I don’t believe there’s anything special about switching from writing 2010 to 2011 on my checks and that goals should be set constantly. But who writes checks anymore?
No, the truth is I love goals and I love the natural starting points the world provides us for setting them. Like Mondays. And tomorrow. And the beginning of a brand spanking new year.
But here it is, almost a week into 2011, and I haven’t spent any time thinking about resolutions. I’ve been too busy unpacking from our vacation, catching up on sleep, setting up January’s budget, preparing December invoices and redesigning my blog. Of course, I could take the time to make things right today, but it’s Wednesday. Who ever heard of starting anything on a Wednesday? Thursdays are no better and I have a birthday party to attend this weekend.
Instead, I propose we officially launch 2011 next Monday. For those of you who participated in the soft launch on January 1 - congratulations. The rest of you? Spend these last few days getting your resolutions in order and we’ll start things right on Monday.
