It’s been one week since I decided to kick the laptop out of bed in an effort to bring a little more balance into my nomadic life. Yes, I work from a traveling home right now, but that doesn’t mean I have to work from bed, right?
Right.
So, how is my attempt to unplug from the matrix at night working out?
I’m about halfway there. Maybe a quarter of the way.
I have successfully shutdown and put my computer away at night, making it less convenient to hop right into work before eating and showering. That’s progress! I have not been exercising in that early morning time, and that’s partly because of the part of my plan that I have yet to address: the iPhone.
I still end most nights by watching TV on the iPhone or catching up on my Draw Something games. (ADDICTIVE APP ALERT!) That usually keeps me awake for at least an hour after I’d originally intended to go to bed, which makes it harder to get up in the morning. It also means my iPhone is right beside my bed in the morning, and I haven’t been able to resist checking email, Twitter, and Facebook first thing in the morning. It’s all right there.
But I am making progress, and I’m already seeing benefits from this one small change. Getting up and having breakfast before working helps me wake up and get a handle on my mental state. Showering is, well, it’s good for everyone. I have been more productive working out of bed - even if it’s just on a couch in a friend’s living room.
Now to pry the iPhone from my bedside, get to sleep earlier, and wake up in time to workout before work!
One step at a time.
Do your nighttime habits help or hinder your work day routine?
I hope they help. I try to get my face washed before I sit down to relax and begin the leisure portion of my day. Ditto with the teeth brushing (although that’s a bit later after I’ve had my last snack of the day). That way I can just about hop into bed at 11pm without having to stop what I was doing to get ready for bed.
