Mother’s Day gift ideas

I don’t know about you, but in my house almost all the gift-giving strategies fall on my shoulders, regardless of the occasion. So if you’re in a similar boat, and you maybe have a hard-to-shop for relative to consider this Mother’s Day, here are just a couple ideas for gifts that fall outside the “lovely framed picture of the grandchildren” spectrum (although frankly, those are the easiest and probably best-received ones):

bfastbed.jpg
Philosophy Breakfast in Bed Bath & Body Set. Three hair/body washes, in the following scents: Cafe Au Lait, Fresh Cream, and Belgium Waffles. Um, YUM.

verafwrs.jpg
Vera Wang flowers from FTD. I don’t normally think FTD arrangements are all that nice, but these Vera Wang bouquets are so pretty, especially the calla lilies. Who wouldn’t love having one of these arrive at their house?

crabtree2.jpg
Triple-Milled Almond Soap from Crabtree & Evelyn. My own mother used to buy this soap years ago, and I still love the way the bars smell and feel. They’re super creamy and last forever.

25 Piece Chocolate Box from MarieBelle. These chocolates are not only exquisite looking, but oh my GOD the flavors: pistachio, champagne, lavender, dulce de leche . . . to name just a few.

Are you buying a gift for your mother or mother-in-law this year? What do you have in mind, if so?

  • My daughter was born right before Mother’s Day and coincidentally, this year, is is ON mother’s day, which means I’m effed.

At least until she’s old enough where we can do mom/daughter days out at spas or something. But right now, in toddler-world, the entire month revolves around her.

I am, however, going to send this link to my husband because I love me some smelly soaps!

  • For my mom? Uhm… drawing a blank. For my Mom in Law? ….that’s up to my husband. HEH.

  • My husband is actually pretty good about helping out with gifts for his side of the family. And, he’s really good at gifts for me. For Mother’s Day I am hoping for a new set of Brighton jewelry. I love all of their pieces and a store near me has a Mother’s Day sale every year - buy two pieces and get on free.

To the poster who posted about her daughter’s birthday being on Mother’s Day - my daughter’s birthday falls on Father’s Day so I feel your pain juggling a birthday and another “holiday”!

  • I was going to get my mom some candy and some books, but now I’m reconsidering!

  • My mom lives in an apartment and my MIL is downsizing to buy a condo, so “stuff” is out of the question. Flowers or plants maybe, something they can grow on the deck or in a sunny window, this year.

  • SuperHero necklace and/or bracelet - I’m getting both this year! yay me!

  • I’ll probably get my mom a gift certificate for a facial at her salon (she lives in the boonies so it’s pretty cheap) and possibly the same thing for my mother-in-law unless my husband has a better idea.
My birthday falls on mother’s day every 4 years, and growing up we always used to have birthday cake on mother’s day at my grandma’s. It wasn’t ever that big of a deal. I stupidly got married in May though, so now once we have kids I’m sure to expect one big gift for birthday/mother’s day/anniversary. Or insist the entire month be a party.
Happy Mother’s day to all of you!

  • We always do potted plants or hanging flower baskets for both my mom and mother-in-law for Mother’s Day but I love these ideas. I think my Mother-in-law would love those chocolates. Funny about the Crabtree and Evelyn soap…my mom always had it too.

  • Oh and I’m due the day after Mother’s Day (although it might be sooner) so I’ll be in the same boat as these other commenters! Funny how that works!

  • In the past my mother, grandmother, sister-in-law & I have always planned some sort of fun activity for us to do together that day. We’ve golfed, gone to the Brimfield Fair (BIG antique/flea market thing in MA), got manis/pedis, massages, this year we are going to a psychic. However, this is MY 1st year as a Mom, and I’m torn between having hubby take the baby (to his Mother’s) as my sister-in-law does with her [older] children, or to keep him with me, not much fun for a baby at a psychic….

Elizabeth - Brighton also has some great lockets & locket keychains that I got for Valentine’s Day - under $50 - great gifts for MIL’s that go beyond the standard picture in a frame.

  • hmm my mother is so not a ‘girly’ mom - not really into jewerly or spa visits… and always on a diet! so that leaves out all of the above. though, she does sometimes like smelly soaps! that and she has a crazy passion for crocks and the ‘doodads’ (her name for them) that go in the little holes… sometimes she is perpetually 15!!!

any other ideas?! i cannot bring myself to buy her crocks or ‘accessories’ LOL

  • Cool gifts! FYI - I came across a website called Someone Spoil Me http://www.someonespoilme.com/gifts/mothers-day/ that had a ton of great Mother’s Day gifts as well. Check it out if you need more ideas!
