Juice glasses

The last time my mother-in-law was coming for a visit, I got a bee in my bonnet about having Good Dishes for guests instead of the mishmash of clearance open-stock dishes we usually use.  I did a lot of searching for the perfect set (I wanted dressy in a grandmotherly way, and not too delicate), and finally chose Johnson Brothers Old Britain Castles in blue.  Here’s the platter so you can get an idea of the style:

Now please imagine the effect when I set the table for her first meal with us and realized all we had were plastic cups in assorted bright cheerful colors.  Yes.

It was too late to go running out to buy new glasses, so I did a little deep breathing and perspective-finding and thought I would just make sure we had good matching GLASS glasses for the NEXT visit.  I looked in a number of stores, each of which had a nice selection, and I chose the ones I liked best. Easy and also peasy.

Next I turned my attention to juice glasses, and that’s where I ran into trouble.  Do you know how difficult it is to find 8-ounce juice glasses?  Very difficult, that’s how difficult.  It’s easy to find short glasses, but they’re for cocktails and they hold 12 or 14 ounces—too much for juice.  I looked in several stores and some of them had literally none—or only colorful plastic options, which we already have. Thank goodness for the internet.

I like these 6-ounce “Bloom” glasses from Macy’s (and they’re on clearance—bonus!), but they don’t go with the china at all.

I found these Anchor Hocking ones on Amazon.com and really liked the simple look of them, but they only hold 5 ounces. Fail.

Was I briefly tempted to go for shock value with these Etsy juice glasses made from beer bottles?  You betcha.  Did I decide it wasn’t worth the fuss?  Sigh.

Sweet Little Tumblers, another Etsy find, are less controversial but again, not a good match with the china.  I pined a little, though.  So cute!  I love that the insides are a different color.

I love the pretty shape of these VIVO juice glasses, and they’re the perfect size (8.5 ounces)—but they’re on pre-order.

These recycled 8-ounce glasses from Greenfeet are the most tempting to me.  They’re gorgeous, and they come in EIGHT different colors.  Problem:  the colors I like best don’t go with the dishes.

OMG, pretty?  They’re Pressed Fruit 8.5-ounce glasses from Williams-Sonoma, and they’re based on vintage jam jars.  Love.

Crate & Barrell sells these cutely-named Gus Glasses in three sizes; the smallest ones are the 7-ounce juice glasses.  They stack, which is nice for skimpy cupboard space.

Which do you like best? I think my top favorites are the Williams-Sonoma Pressed Fruit ones, and my second favorites are the Greenfeet recycled ones.

  • I have to go with the Williams-Sonoma pressed fruit glasses. They kinda go with the vintagey feel of the plates.

  • I also like the Williams-Sonoma glasses the best.

Both my mom and my mother-in-law bought really inexpensive but nice glasses at Ikea. They come in 3 different sizes. I don’t know if you’re close to an Ikea, but you might check it out.

  • I like the W-S glasses first, and the C&B ones second (I have limited cabinet space!). And I do still LOVE your MIL dishes and am quite envious that SaLy got one of the cups in her PIF package!

  • what about actual jam jars? Too kitschy? But they’re cheap and 8 oz.

  • Bed, Bath & Beyond has lots of glassware, too — I just bought some from there, and they have the kind of juice glasses you’re talking about.

  • I like the W-S glasses best for your dishes. My second choice is the Vivo, but the recycled glass ones are a close third. They get extra bonus points for being recycled. And I sort of think the copper ones would go. Or, is it possible to buy a bunch of different colors? Would that be scandalous?

  • It seems as if the Greenfeet glasses are 24.95 PER GLASS???? In that case, I’d choose the pressed fruit ones. Can’t go wrong with W/S. =)

  • For you, I think the WS glasses.

But for me? Who doesn’t give a fig if my juice glasses match anything else? The Etsy beer bottle ones! Besides the Rolling Rock, the shop also has other fave cheap-o beers I like — Red Stripe and Corona. I’m totally getting some and taking lots of pictures of my kids drinking milk out of beer bottles. Heh.

  • I love the WS glasses the best, not only for your dishes, but for MINE. I love them!

  • Marie Green- YIKES—I thought it was for a set of FOUR. Good thing I didn’t order “them” and find out it was “it”!

  • I was in IKEA a couple of months ago, and I remember seeing a few styles there that had me wishing all of my existing juice glasses would break soon. Their stuff is mostly modern, but there were some very cute ones that came in a variety of colors, and then some that looked a little like wine glasses but would totally go with the style of your dishes.

  • If 9 oz isn’t too big, Pfaltzgraff is having a buy 3 get 1 free sale.

  • What about the 7 oz. Gibraltar from Libby. I have them and love them because they are reasonably priced and very heavy duty. They’ve actually outlasted 6 kids!

  • Thank you for your blog, it is nice to know I am not alone. I have been looking for juice glasses for several years. I really want some with small painted flowers on the sides like my grandmother had. Oh well.
