Oh hey, another holiday is looming around the corner, BLEAH. I mean, oh, Valentine’s Day, my FAVORITE, I choo-choo-choose YOU!

(BLEAH.)

Please just tell me I’m not supposed to send in Valentines to my 3-year-old’s preschool. The teachers would warn us about this, right? Or is it just one of those Things that Good Parents Know About? ARRRGH.

While I’m stewing over the possibility of needing to make cards for a classroom of kids whose names my son cannot be trusted to accurately pronounce (one girl has been known in our household as “Prafarsha” forever, because that’s what he said her name was. FALSE), please enjoy some Valentine’s Day Gift Ideas for Guys, should you be shopping for the occasion.

4 Elements Kit from The Art of Shaving. My husband recently bought this kit and now I can’t stop smelling him. In a good way, I mean. I recommend the Sandalwood scent. Mmmmrrrrooww.

Men’s Sterling Tag Necklace. You can personalize this gorgeous silver tag with up to 3 lines, 15 characters per line. I’m sure you can think of something to put on there.

Blackened Brass Hourglass Keychain. Tip this little vintage hourglass on its side, and tell him you’ll meet him in the bedroom when the sand is through. Assuming you can distract the kids, of course.

Flipside Wallet. A flip-open, hard-surface wallet to hold all the crap he insists on carrying around.

DIY Photo Block Kit. Have him hang some pretty pictures of the two of you in his office with this hardwood photo block kit.

Engraved champagne bottle. Custom-engrave a bottle of champagne and enjoy a keepsake glass of Valentine’s Day bubbly together. If you’re really lucky, you can toast the babysitter who let you enjoy a NIGHT OUT FOR ONCE OMG.

The Wire: The Complete Series. Get him the whole damn box set of this complicated, critically-loved show. Bonus: you get to watch it, too.

Lastly, some worthy V-Day browsing: Best of Parent Hacks: Valentine’s Day, Mighty Goods’ My Kinky Valentine, Dooce’s Valentine’s Day card roundup.

  • I’m sorry to tell you that my three year old did exchange valentines with the other kids in her preschool. Some had candy or pencils attached and some did not (Hers were cards only). They don’t have to have the other chidren’s names on them, just sign them “From your friend, (your son’s name)” At her parties, the parent volunteers helped pass them out and it was easier if they weren’t addressed specifically to each child.

  • Yes! My husband loves the art of shaving stuff. I got it for him for Christmas a few years ago, and not realizing how much it cost he asked me to go pick him up a refill of the shaving cream a couple of months later. Um, no. So now it’s a special occasion gift only. He also loves their styptic pen for cuts.
This year, however, he’ll be receiving an ice cream cake. I’d bake him something, but the man has a thing for ice cream. Who am I to deny him that?

  • Crap, my husband already bought me The Wire, but I would recommend this for almost anyone.

As for the Valentines, I’m probably not the person to ask because I forget about them every year and never get them done even though my kid was in day care. Until this year - my son’s kindergarten teacher sent out a reminder and (most important) a list of every kid’s name. Thank god someone out there realizes that without both components, it’s never going to happen in my house.

  • V-Day was Friday. My kid’s a part-timer; Tuesday, Wednesday, & Thursday. He doesn’t even go to school on Friday. Why did I feel like such a total failure when the NEXT Tuesday, they sent home a big heart-shaped monstrosity filled with valentines address to him from every. single. other. kid. in the damn class. Why wasn’t I WARNED?!?!
