I know you and I live in different cities so I can’t make generalizations, but in MY city it is mid-July. STILL SUMMER. And yet all my favorite stores are clearing out the summer stuff. Some people roll their eyes at summer clearance and school supply sales in mid-July, but I say WOOOO: it’s generally right around this time of year I’m finding out that a handmedown swimsuit isn’t going to last through another kid after all, or that for some reason a child has only two pairs of shorts in his size, or that a 2-piece suit might have been a better choice.
The Children’s Place has their summer stuff on sale, plus an additional 30% off. Here’s an outfit I bought for Elizabeth for just over $10:

Pretty tee, $3.49.

Yoga capris for $2.99.

Breezer maryjanes, $4.19. Elizabeth picked these out and I didn’t think I’d like them, but they’re DARLING. And they were GREAT when she fell into the pool fully dressed and I could just dry off her shoes with a towel instead of air-drying them in the sun for hours.
At Old Navy, I bought swimsuits for the boy children in the next couple of sizes:

Boys Hibiscus-Print Swim Trunks, $4.99 down from $14.50.

I wavered and finally decided against the rashguard swim shirts, even though they were only $4.99 down from $14.50, because I didn’t like the big meaningless 94 on the front. Then, later, when my order was already placed, I thought, “WHAT WAS I THINKING?? Who cares if there’s a number on the front, when the number on the TAG is $4.99??”
For higher-quality (but with a coordinating higher price), I like the Lands’ End Overstocks.

I bought these Terrain Sandals in aqua for $19.99 down from $34.50; they come in seven other colors, too. I have another similar pair of Lands’ End sandals (the Trekker) that I L-O-V-E: unlike my other thin-plastic-soled sandals, they feel like walking in a sneaker. I hope I love the Terrains as much.

Lands’ End has a few super-good deals on swimsuits, too, which I didn’t need because I JUST bought some, but this girls’ Tugless suit (in several fabric choices) is $9.99 down from $26.50.

This women’s custom suit (you can choose cup size/type) is down to $12.99 from $91.50, holy crap.

Like Lands’ End, L.L. Bean has a good overstocks section, which is where I found this darling suit for $8.99 down from $24.50. I bought it for Elizabeth, and it is even cuter than I’d expected.

They also have their baby/toddler unshrinkable tank dress marked down to $8.99 from $22.50, and I’m going to buy one as soon as I can decide which cute pattern to choose. I was thinking I’d buy it extra-roomy and maybe she can wear it over a shirt when the weather gets chillier. Which I guess it will, IN ANOTHER COUPLE MONTHS.
Helen has those Mary Janes. I love them. And K. has two of those Land’s End suits.
Thanks for the sandal tip. Mine are hurting my feet.

I actually went inside the mall yesterday and Payless was having a sale, too. I got a pair of shoes for my toddler girl for THREE BUCKS — 3!! — and an awesome pair of loungey sneakers for me, for only ten bucks.

Oh, Swistle, you never let me down. This was so completely timely, as I’m about to head down to FL to see my little niece and was so desperate for something cute to buy her, I came really close to spending $50 on an outfit. That she’d be able to wear for A FEW MONTHS.
I’m going to Children’s Place today.
Thank you!

I am so glad that you liked the LL Bean swimsuit. I have had great luck with all of their toddler clothes and at this point the majority of my daughters outfits are from there.

Amelie had those Mary janes (she’s since grown out and is currently wearing a pair of Stride Rite sandals that are awesome too) and they were the BEST! She’s a child automatically attracted to mud and dirt and they were so, so easy to clean, plus they were easy on and off.
The only downside was that her little baby feet tended to sweat more in them which gave her “‘tinky toes”. Nothing a bath couldn’t fix. : )

The 94 isn’t meaningless to Old Navy- it’s the year they started. Big deal right?
