Page-a-day calendars

I chose my kitchen wall calendar: it’s the Art of Valentina one I mentioned in this year’s calendar post. I put it up yesterday at midnight, after spending part of the evening doing my usual New Year’s Eve tradition of copying all the birthdays and anniversaries from the old calendar to the new. (I made a mistake right on the first page and had to scribble it out. Excellent.)

I also have a second calendar on its way to me: a Wallpaper calendar (photo from Amazon.com). I’m not sure about it, though; from the picture it looks like it might be iffy quality (the font does not inspire confidence, especially on the front cover), and there aren’t any reviews. I got it on a nice enough price that it was a gamble I was willing to take in case it’s awesome. In the meantime, I still have other choices in my Amazon cart, and as they drop to half price I might get a different one. It’s just for next to my computer, so I don’t need it first thing on January 1st as I do with the kitchen calendar.

Page-a-day calendars are the same way: I don’t mind catching up on the first couple of weeks all at once. Paul and Rob wanted puzzle ones this year, so I got two (photos above from Amazon.com) when they dropped to 50% off, and now Amazon keeps suggesting more page-a-days. I haven’t had one in recent years, but I might like to.

The Metropolitan Museum of Art page-a-day calendar (photo from Amazon.com). I like to think of myself as someone who Appreciates Art—despite the fact that I never go to art museums or do anything else to put myself in proximity to art. So this calendar catches my eye: I’d put it on my desk, and every day I would have a new piece of art to appreciate! I could even make it a New Year’s resolution: I will attempt to appreciate one small piece of art per day.

The New Yorker cartoon-a-day calendar (photo from Amazon.com). When I was growing up, my parents had two giant volumes of New Yorker cartoons. It wasn’t until I was an adult that I realized the reason so many of them were hard to figure out is that they were illustrations for articles. I wonder if the calendar would have the same issue, or if they’d all be stand-alone jokes?

F in Exams page-a-day calendar (photo from Amazon.com). I’ve seen some of these before and have found them funny. I’m not sure I’d find 365 of them funny.

Crap at My Parents’ House page-a-day calendar (photo from Amazon.com). This, too, might continue to be funny, or might get a little tiresome.

Farmer’s Almanac page-a-day calendar (photo from Amazon.com). This type of calendar might be better for variety. But might be a little folksy.

Dave Barry page-a-day calendar (photo from Amazon.com). I have liked Dave Barry books; I’ve used them medicinally, even, to help get through a sad or upset stage. But it’s been awhile, and I’m not sure if I would still like them now or if I would think, “Ah, yes, I remember what laughing was like in the ’90s.”

Sibley’s bird-a-day calendar (photo from Amazon.com). I had the Sibley wall calendar once and liked it. I could see maybe maintaining interest in daily bird pictures.

Watercolor-a-day calendar (photo from Amazon.com). OH COOL. It comes with a little set of paints, and has you do a little painting each day! I’m adding this to my “interesting/unusual gift ideas” list for next year, in case they do a 2014 one too.

  • I used to get a word-of-the day calendar that was fun and felt educational but isn’t made anymore. Now I get Mary Engelbreit. I bought my daughter the origami page-a-day calendar at Mir’s recommendation, and she LOVES it.

  • I always get dh a page-a-day for his desk and put it in his stocking but I’ve really got to smarten up and wait until after the 1st to buy it and save some $$. In the past I’ve done vocabulary, puzzles, trivia, stupid facts. This year I chose the one from Failbook. He doesn’t read the website so he was already reading ahead and cracking up.

  • I had a French phrase-a-day calendar in college, and it was awesome because the phrases were hilarious. My roommates and I loved turning it over and seeing what new crazy phrase was every day. I wish I remembered what they were now, but it’s been about 10 years now.

  • My MIL always picks out a small wall calendar for me and I admit I felt a small pang of sadness when this year’s theme was a repeat from last year. No bother, moving on.

Buying puzzle page a days when they are on sale? Brilliant. My dad just got a bonus gift that I know he will enjoy. In fact, I think he will like it *better* knowing it was on clearance.

Question: do you enjoy the super planners style of calendars? I miss my Real Simple Flexible Planning Calendar with a vengeance. Most calendars of this style seem to want to make the month split which doesnt work bc I put my calendar on an easel like thing in my kitchen (Its actually a cookbook holder but never gets used for that)

  • Kate- I’ve never tried a planner calendar. So far I haven’t needed one—but as the kids get older and involved in more activities, I may need to upgrade!
