Several years ago, clenching my teeth through another unsuccessful, crabby, sticky attempt at making heart-shaped pancakes for Valentine’s Day breakfast, I realized my problem: I am a lover not a fighter shopper not a maker. Instead of making heart-shaped pancakes, I should be shopping for heart-shaped cereal bowls. Since then, my only Valentine’s Day woe is that there is a low limit on the number of heart-shaped dishes I want to store for a year between uses.

Zak Designs Mini Heart-Shaped Bowls (photo from Amazon.com). The stackability of these makes them something I could consider using all year.

Valentine’s Day by Etsy

I love Valentine’s Day. “Hallmark Holiday”? Pfff. It WAY predates Hallmark.
Paul and I don’t often celebrate it between us, though. Some years I’ll have a yen for a heart-shaped box of chocolates and he’s happy to indulge me, or other years I’ll use the day as an excuse to give him something that took some extra effort, like the year his favorite slippers wore out and he couldn’t find any he liked to replace them, so I researched it and found him some I thought would be perfect and gave them to him on Valentine’s Day. Ooo la la, SLIPPERS! Slippers are not exactly the one single perfect long-stemmed rose, but they are, for me, a better way of saying “I love you and what you want is important to me.” (It seems to me as if the “single perfect rose” is another way of saying “I didn’t spring for a whole dozen but you have to act as if this is better.”)
But most years we don’t treat it as a couple’s holiday. I like giving a little Valentine’s Day treat to the kids on their breakfast plates in the morning, and I like helping prepare for their classroom valentine exchanges. I like sending valentines to my friends sometimes. I like using valentine postcards for my Postcrossing hobby. I like the pretty decorations: I nearly always get a new cute mug or picture frame or plate. And I like the way it breaks up the low-holiday stretch of winter.
I’m picky, though. I had a boyfriend long ago who would give me, like, a red teddy bear holding an “I luv you” heart, and, uh. I mean. Thank you for the thought, but what IS that thought? I have said it before and I’ll say it again: if you want something that doesn’t look like it was grabbed from the “Oops, did you forget it was Valentine’s Day?” display at the grocery store, try Etsy.

I’m sure I’m not the only one who’s trying to cut back on superfluous spending lately—cramped budgets! Looming holidays! Insane daycare costs! Medical co-payments! Babysitters! Pants for my son who keeps getting taller but not wider so nothing ever fits, ever!—so I thought it would be fun, and possibly even useful, to share a few of the things we’ve bought lately that have been worth every penny and then some. Caveat: these have to be things we’ve bought for ourselves, not for our kids, okay?
I’ll go first:

Love Etsy. Love fall. (Don’t despair if the individual item I’ve linked to has sold out: the sellers often have more of the same item listed in their shops.)

Draft snake in “Lush” by Oh the Cuteness! on Etsy. Draft snakes help keep the chill out, but can we call them something less slithery-sounding? Swiss cake rolls are long and thin, too.

The working mom purse: what’s in yours?
Categories: At the office, Toothsome products (for grownups), Travel
Do you tend to carry the same things in your bag, whether you’re heading to the office or to the playground? I know this isn’t really a thrilling topic for a blog post, but I was noticing recently as I shoveled the contents from a milk-stained “casual” purse to my fancier “work” clutch that no matter where I’m going, I drag the same inventory along with me. Here’s my can’t-leave-home-without-it list:

Back-to-school stuff for grown-ups
Categories: At the office, School gear, Toothsome products (for grownups)
I took Rob and William, entering fifth and third grade respectively, to buy school supplies last night. My heart was pounding. My hands were sweating. It was difficult for me to let them choose their own colors/designs, rather than pressuring them into buying what I liked.
Relief came from the realization that I could buy school supplies for myself anytime I wanted to, even if I didn’t have my own list to consult. The nice thing about school supplies is they’re PRACTICAL. I bought two packages of Hello Kitty pencils, but I USE pencils. I bought a large package of many-colored Sharpie markers, but I USE Sharpie markers. I bought six 1-subject notebooks in assorted colors, six folders in colors to match the notebooks, a 3-ring binder with unicorns on it, and a Hello Kitty lunchbox, but I USE….uh.
Some more justifiably practical choices:

More and more often I turn to Etsy.com when I need a special gift but don’t want something too corny. When Paul and I had our 10-year anniversary, he chose me a pair of earrings from Etsy, because he knew I’d like just about anything he found there—and that he’d be likely to avoid the dreaded heart pendant the stores are always pushing on bewildered guys.
For Mother’s Day, Etsy is a great place to find a gift that doesn’t suggest that the giver chose it at random from the “Mother’s Day Specials!” flier that came from the department store.

Awesome desk accessories for home and office

Business are going through layoffs, freelance clients are cutting back on their budgets, and sitting down to balance the checkbook has never been so depressing. Short of outfitting your office walls with Xanax-dispensing pellet guns, is there anything you can do to make your work environment more tolerable?
Well, maybe so. A little extra organizational happiness can’t be a bad thing, right?

If you read me over at Swistle, you know I have been obsessed with enthusiastic about cloth napkins recently. I initially tried them because of a feeling of wanting to purchase clearance merchandise no matter what it is environmentalism, but it turns out we LOVE using them. They’re soft and comfy! And I don’t iron them, and no one cares!
Well, so now I have to buy more than we need, to vent some of my enthusiasm. I don’t even know how many I’ve bought so far, but…many. I could sew clothes for ALL the VonTrapp children out of cloth napkins and still have enough napkins for them to use at dinner.

More high-end products: are they worth the hype?
Categories: Baby gear, House & Home, Toothsome products (for grownups)
If your household is anything like mine, you’re probably doing some cutting back these days, and luxury items seem a little more . . . luxurious than they used to be. As in, boy that necklace sure is pretty but I have other things I need to buy right now, like FOOD.
With budget restraints in mind, it can be hard to justify a high-end purchase, especially if you’re not really sure if it’s worth it. Is that spendy moisturizer really going to “revitalize” your skin, or will a drugstore brand do just as well? Let’s explore a few buzz-worthy purchases:
