Mommy Needs a Business

with Kristen

Mommy Needs a Business is all about the joys of running your own business. You never drafted a complete business plan, you couldn't be further from your law school degree and you are now referring to your 12 years of law enforcement as your "former life." But you get to screen print tee shirts in your pajamas while pulling your toddler and preschooler out of vats of ink. What more could a mom want?

Making lists

My friend Wendy is really trying to fix me. She is the one that brought me into the wild and crazy world of craft shows. She swears by craft shows. Once you get beyond all those people who pull out 9 million items from the back of a minivan and then proceed to sell thousands of dollars of items that sell for $2.50, it’s fairly uneventful.

The problem is, those craft show people? They know what they are doing. Have you ever seen someone unpack 9 million items from shrink wrap in under 20 minutes? The amount of time it takes me is fairly consistent. I need about 15 minutes more than the time available. Two days to get my booth prepared? It will take me 2 days and 15 minutes. Wendy? She has everything down to a science. I think she is ready in 30 minutes.

She swears by her lists. After I was running over to borrow hangers for the 3rd show in a row, she just rolled her eyes at me.

Wendy: Girl, how do you even know what you brought?
Kristen: I follow that very complicated formula known as “throwing everything into the back of the truck and hoping for the best.”
Wendy: You need a list. I wouldn’t make it without my list. See here? Hangers. On the list.
Kristen: Wouldn’t it just be easier to add “Kristen–hangers” on your list too?
Wendy: Take some hangers. What happened to the hangers I gave you last time?
Kristen: Hmm. That is an excellent question. I have absolutely no idea.
Wendy: You need to make a list. It’s not that difficult.
Kristen: Can you make a list for me?
Wendy: Girl. What am I going to do with you?
Kristen: I just need to BE you.
Wendy: I am in year 5 of this business. You’ll get it. Just start making a list.

I love those who have blazed the path before me. Now if I could just learn how to make a list already.

  • I love this post. It makes me think we are soul mates because Wendy = Bryan.

  • ooh i love lists. the best part is once you make them you have pretty much committed it to memory. that way when you lose the list you will still be ok. :)
