Morning Makeup Routine Made Easy

My mother, life-long lover of make-up, would not approve of this post. For my mom, “putting on your face” is an Event. While she always looks beautiful, her time consuming rituals have left many annoyed, irritated, and late in her wake. It may surprise some of the readers of my personal blog, due to the fact that I am so product obsessed, that my morning routine takes less than 10 minutes. Fueled by a desire to not have scores of family members frustrated with me, I have my make-up routine down to a science.

So let’s get down to business.

Foundation - Necessary for most of us to achieve a flawless complexion! I’ve found the easiest and quickest application in mousse textures, like Maybelline Dream Matte Mousse . It’s also a great formula for layering your coverage- you can make it full or light coverage depending on how heavy your hand is. Bonus Points - Try a foundation primer.

Powder - For oilier complexions, use a pressed powder and apply it with a powder brush. I prefer Clinique Stay Matte Pressed Powder . I’ve tried everything, and this definitely absorbs oil best. For drier skin, try a loose powder. I like Laura Mercier Translucent Powder .

Concealer - We all need a little help under the eyes. I pat concealer under my lower lash line and blend with my fingers. Ones to try- Laura Mercier Secret Camouflage , or more budget friendly Max Factor Erace .

Blush - Adding a little glow to your cheeks is a must! Sonia Kushak at Target makes a wonderful, affordable blush brush . I’m a fan of Nars blush and Benefit Dallas , which is something of a blush/bronzer hybrid. Or try Neutrogena Mineral Sheers blush , which comes with a brush built in.

Eyeshadow - I think brown palettes work on everyone. L’Oreal makes affordable, long lasting ones like the Autumn Leaves Quad . I would encourage you to invest in a few eyeshadow brushes, like these from Sephora .

Mascara - NOT optional. Opens your eyes, and helps define your face. Budget friendly- L’Oreal Voluminous Mascara . Budget buster- Chanel Inimitable . Bonus Points - Curl those lashes!

Lips - I’m a bit gloss crazy myself, with my favorite being the non-tacky Chanel Glossimer . But I’m nearly as in love with Nivea’s Kiss of Flavor Lip Balms , which provide just enough color and just enough lip conditioning to finish off your look.

What’s your morning make-up routine?

  • I’ve got it down to a science: A touch of concealer, a swipe of mascara, and then my multitaskers: A Smashbox lip/cheek color, and this stila eyeliner/eyeshadow/smudger thing, which I adore: http://tinyurl.com/5lv8pw

DONE IN UNDERTWO MINUTES, MY FRIEND.

  • If I have no time… concealer and blush. Well, more specifically, MAC Studio concealer and NARS Multiple (I smear it all over my cheeks and above my eyes –don’t judge ;)

Those two things keep me from looking like a zombie.

  • Awesome suggestions, thank you! Metalia — the Stila liner/smudgey thingy — so you just use it above your eye?

  • I too support the Laura Mercier Translucent Powder; expensive, but lasts forever and is completely natural looking. Her oil-free foundation is terrific as well.

Otherwise, I got nothing. I’m here to learn.

I am a product of a mother who worked in retail for 28+ years. I grew up wondering through the cosmetic departments and taking any samples they’d send to me!

  • Nataly- It’s really great, and three products in one. I use the liner (I have it in Violet) to rim my eyes above and below, and then top it off with a touch of the built-in shadow, and then smudge the line with the other end.

  • Metalia, thanks. On my list. I lurve products which do more than one thing.

  • I know not everyone wants to take the extra 10 minutes to do this every day, but I think it makes such a huge difference in how I feel. I just feel more put together and comfortable with a few finishing touches!

  • Wondering what you use to apply the mousse foundation? Do I have to dip my finger in there? I HATE things I have to stick my finger in, like carmex in the tub or vaseline. Also, to you ladies who actually use makeup…how do you choose a foundation color (drugstore).

    St  |  October 18th, 2008 at 2:37 pm

  • I use my fingers. You could also use a makeup sponge, but I think I get better control over the application with my fingers.

As far as choosing colors go- this is why I generally stick with department store foundations. I would rather spend the money on one bottle than on the trial and error of drugstore foundations. The displays are never accurate and it is impossible to tell by looking at the bottle if a color will work for you. I just try to mentally compare it to what I have at home that I know works.
