Skin care tips that work

After three years of informal “research,” which largely took place in my bathroom and at Neiman Marcus, I’ve finally found a system that works for my skin. It’s been a long process, but having skin to be proud of has definitely been worth the effort. So let me save you a little time, and hopefully some cash, with this list of what products you really need in your skin care regime!

Face Wash - I would like to think this goes without saying, but you need to wash your face daily! It is the foundation of your entire skin care routine. For normal skin, good old Cetaphil will get the job done. For drier skin, try a cream cleanser like Neutrogena Deep Clean . For the oilier complexions, like mine, nothing works like Chantecaille Rice and Geranium cleanser . I know because I’ve tried everything!

SPF - Daily SPF is the best way to protect your skin from aging and skin cancer! I really like Neutrogena Dry Touch Sunblock . My favorite is Perricone Solar Protection for Face . While more expensive, it does double duty as both a moisturizer and makes skin so soft!

Eye Cream - I am often asked “at what age should I start using anti-aging products?” ERR ON THE SIDE OF CAUTION! Wouldn’t you rather start too soon rather than too late? Weleda Rose Intense Eye Cream gets the job done for dark circles AND anti-aging.

Body Lotion - Moisture will slow down the aging process not just for your face, but for your body as well. Moisturize after your shower, when your skin is still damp. Vaseline Cocoa Butter Lotion smells amazing and makes skin incredibly soft. Hugo Naturals Shea Butter and Oatmeal has a delicious aroma, and is paraben free.

Night Moisturizer - Just like eye cream- why not start early? My mom is a big fan of Neutrogena Anti-Wrinkle Intensive Night Cream . They also make an anti-blemish formula for those of you dealing with the double whammy of wrinkles AND acne. If you have a little more room in your budget, try Perricone Face Finishing Moisturizer , which I love because it doesn’t feel greasy on my oily skin.

Bonus Points - Try a hand cream with SPF like Neutrogena Age Shield . Remember- the hands are one of the first places to visibly age. Anti-oxidant serums are another way to slow the aging process. The gold standard is SkinCeuticals CE Ferulic . I’ve used it, and it is recommended by every facialist I’ve ever met, and is constantly winning best product awards.

Bonus Tip - Try sites like Makeup Alley for useful product reviews!

  • I like Paula’s Choice products. It is only available online. The prices are reasonable. It is the only line that I have found to care for my breakout prone extremely dry skin.

  • I want to try the Chantecaille face wash. My face is oily too and while I love my Estee Lauder face wash, sometimes I think my face gets ‘immune’ to it and needs something else thrown in the mix.

  • I love Neutrogena, and also Aveeno! Thanks for the tips!

  • Jennifer- your face getting immune to things is something that I definitely think happens. I alternate my Chantecaille with other things for just that reason.

  • What would you recommend for a day moisturizer? I’ve been on the hunt for the “perfect” moisturizer that isn’t too heavy, maybe has SPF, and won’t cause breakouts but still delivers anti-aging benefits. I know there are a million and one options out there. Any suggestions?

  • I really think you’d like the Perricone product referenced above- I use it as a moisturizer. It’s great for break out prone skin. That product also contains DMAE, which is an anti-ager. I’ve also used the Oily of Olay day moisturizer for oily skin and really liked it as well.
