I, Natalie, am a geek. And no, not a geek like I write code and buy the latest gadgets, but a geek like I get both small and big thrills from getting stuff DONE, from making stuff TIDIER, from feeling more FREE of things. While most would call it nesting (or even “being anal”), my husband calls it “geeking out” – something I do quite often.
In my house – while my husband would kill me for writing this – nothing thrills me more than ticking stuff off a to-do list. As a project manager by day, I know that the simplest stuff ALWAYS falls through the cracks if it’s not written down, so at home, I write it down! If it’s cluttered, piled, or just plain annoying – I write it down, and that means, eventually, it gets done! Because even if it doesn’t get done RIGHT AWAY, I can at least sleep easier knowing that it WILL eventually get done – because it was written down.
And while ticking stuff off the to-do list DOES have its perks, I’m not sure there’s a more fun item to tick off that list than re-organizing a space that previously wasn’t organized. Take for example, all that crap that was “shoved” underneath my bathroom counter. Well over the last few months, all that CRAP has been put into labelled bins and mini-tupperware-drawers beneath my counter – and good GRIEF is it easy to find stuff now! Just opening the vanity is like a little slice of geek heaven!
But I think my favourite “geek move”, the move that REALLY helps me shake free of the cobwebs and feel like a human being again, is the move where I book our weekends off. And what I mean by that is I’ll book our weekends “PLAN-FREE” – no socializing, no dinner plans, and not even a to-do list in sight. Sometimes the best plan is NO plan. You get to hang out, unwind, and have no pressures from all those things sitting written down on that to-do list…

Haha! Very true, i am anal about similar stuff.. and not as much for house hold organisation.. but for planning. Even if its a day trip to the beach, I wil have a list of things to pack, things to carry, extras, just in case’s and an alternate plan.. so if suddenly thunder storm comes, i dont have to pack up and head home.. we can difinitely do something else… but not at the beach!
And though my husband is not very fond of the lists.. he always appreciates the end results.. and now doesnt meddle in my list making! Phew

I find that the plan-free weekends are the weekends I get the most stuff done. I don’t have socializing/extended family/etc eating up my weekend and there is something energizing about knowing that anything productive I do is just the icing on the cake. And, boy! Do I love icing!
My fiance also mocked my lists, menu postings, and general home organizing systems. Then after a few weeks of good healthy meals and being able to locate the mortgage paperwork, he appreciated every little labeled basket I made.
