Put away those frozen mozzarella sticks, and replace them with these healthy alternatives. These mozzarella sticks are an awesome snack for your kids. Serve them as an after school bite, or on a party platter at birthday parties. Mozzarella sticks are often seen as unhealthy, but with this recipe you can serve the cheesy snack your kids love, guilt-free.
What you’ll need:
- One 8 pack of your choice of string cheese (we suggest skim)
- 1 cup whole-wheat breadcrumbs
- ¼ teaspoon salt
- ½ cup cauliflower puree
- 1 Tbs cornstarch
- 1 Tbs sesame seeds
- 1 cup shredded, part-skim mozzarella
- 1 egg
- Nonstick cooking spray
Keep in mind the the quantity of ingredients depends on the number of mozzarella sticks you want to make, but for this one they will be 16 healthy mozzarella sticks.
Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Cut the cheese sticks into half, and then freeze the slices until completely frozen in a freezer. Beat the egg in a bowl, and then use a differentboil to combine the Parmesan cheese and whole-wheat breadcrumbs. To bread the cheese sticks, first dip the frozen cheese stick into the cauliflower puree, then into the beaten egg, then into the breadcrumbs mixture. Once all your sticks are coated, place them on a baking sheet enclosed with aluminum foil coated using cooking spray or a few drops of olive oil. Bake in oven until crisp or about 4 minutes. Watch them closely so that they don’t melt completely. Sprinkle with salt and serve warm with some marianara sauce for dipping
