Give winter the boot

Val works in a library, and she’s looking to upgrade her work wardrobe, from the bottom up (if you will):

I mostly wear jeans to work. I also wear athletic shoes, because I’m on my feet a lot and occasionally deal with flare ups of Plantar Fasciitis.

Our university just merged with the medical university in our town and they have a much more “corporate” setting. My colleagues and I feel it’s only a matter of time before they implement a dress code. I’ve picked up a few things that I like; things I could probably wear to work without a problem - if I could figure out what to put on my feet! So, I’ve begun looking into shoes that I can wear with clothing
other than jeans. And that leads me to my question, which is a two-parter:

Given that I live in Ohio and winter will be here soon, what the heck should I be looking for to wear with dress pants? And what should I be wearing on my feet underneath those shoes, that won’t look completely stupid but will still prevent me from freezing off my toes?

When I got Val’s e-mail, I started reading up on Shoes for Plantar Fasciitis, and I learned two interesting things: worn out athletic shoes can aggravate the condition, as can extreme heels (either too high OR too low). So Val should toss those old running shoes, for starters, as they may actually be making her feet hurt MORE. She should also avoid flat shoes, which will make her feet hurt. Instead, she is best off with a low heel, say between one and two inches, and a good arch support, either from the shoe itself, or from a custom orthotic or an OTC orthotic insert.

For winter, look for boots; an ankle boot is fantastic with pants, as it won’t bunch up at the knee (and ankle boots are EVERYWHERE this year), while a knee-high boot is great with skirts and dresses. Avoid a very round toe; instead look for a square toe box, or an elongated oval, or even a pointy toe, if you like. The pointy toe is dressier, but the square toe is often more comfortable, particularly if you are on your feet a lot during the day, and will still lengthen the leg line. Riding boots, which are huge this year, have a nice oval toe box.

Finally, go with a slightly chunkier heel, which offers more support than a wee skinny heel.

Underneath the boots, Val can wear tights or socks, or socks OVER tights, for really cold days. Boots are incredible versatile in terms of hosiery, because no one can see that you’ve layered up with a pair of wool ski socks.

  • Those are great plantar fascitis recommendations. Really, if anyone is wearing sneakers on a semi-regular basis, they should be buying new ones every 6 months or so. This is how you prevent foot problems from arising.

  • Becca, thank you for that reminder about sneakers. I know I should get new ones more often, but then I decide to save money instead. But health trumps money any day. I am off to find some new ones this week… (if you have favorites, let me know!)

And Susan, those are awesome boots :)

  • Nataly, I got some Ryka sneakers for my last pair and I really love them. (And they were reasonably priced at DSW.) I have had issues with other sneakers having seams on them that press into my foot and are very uncomfortable. These don’t do that at all.

  • I work in an academic library, and so many librarians wear Dansko clogs - especially their basic style, the Professional - that it can be kind of funny. They are very supportive and comfortable shoes, especially the traditional ’stapled clog’ styles, and I see them worn with both dress pants and skirts (with tights) at my library. I also see them a lot on doctors - my university has a medical school and a hospital - so I’d bet the new ‘corporate’ culture at the medical university would allow them. Doctors do tend to spend a lot of time on their feet!

Signed, I haven’t bought a pair of shoes that wasn’t by Dansko since 2003. Except for those Old Navy flip-flops. So I may be biased. But I’m also RIGHT!

  • Smartwool socks are a lifesaver for cold toes!

  • I am awash in amazement. Those boots? They are almost mine!! Square toes, 1.5 inch heel, even the little boot belt accent thingy. Mine are all leather, not with the leather-suede mix — but apart from that? Susan picked out *my* boots.

There is hope for me yet.

  • I also have the PF. If you get an orthotic, which I highly suggest you do. Lots of shoe companies make removable insoles so you can put your orthotics in. Joseph Siebel, Romika, Ecco, Dansko, a lot of the new Clarks, Merrells, New Balance, thats all I can think of from the top of my head. Good luck. Foot pain is the devil!

  • When I was working as a psychologist in a medical-center setting and was also newly diagnosed with arthritis in my toes AND plantar fasciitis, I bought my first pair of Dansko “Professional” clogs. They were everywhere on the hospital campus–all the doctors, nurses, and techs seemed to wear them. I still see them all the time when I go to clinics or hospitals, and other places where employees are on their feet all day (i.e. teachers….). They are definitely foot-saving and worth every penny (I’ve had my first pair for almost 10 years now and they’re still in perfect shape), but my problem is feeling very unstylish and clunky in them. It seems that foot-healthy shoes and “clunky and unstylish” go hand in hand—sigh. But what do you all think? In some settings those clogs are definitely kind of hip and trendy–what everyone is wearing!

I haven’t looked in a long time–does Dansko make any new cool-looking shoes/boots these days?

  • I have pf also, and have had really good luck with Land’s End’s shoes. They have removable insoles, and so my orthotic fits perfect.

  • I have really big calves and the only way I feel comfortable wearing skirts is with tall boots. But - anyone with generous calves knows how frustrating it is to see all the pretty boots in the stores and not be able to zip them up!

Just the other day I found a pair very similar to those beautiful ones above at good old Eddie Bauer. Another great place for wide calf boots is the aptly named http://www.wide-calf-boots.com.

  • I second (third? more?) the recommendation for the Danskos. And, yes, they do have some cute new styles…. I’m lobbying for a pair of mary janes for Christmas…. maybe red.

I also love smart wool dress socks and hot sox. Check out your local sporting goods place… most of the brands that make hiking socks have dress socks now…. or order them from Campmoor or Sierra Traders.

  • I have a similar shoe problem — not PF, but Morton’s Neuroma. I’ve found Mary Janes that will accomodate my orthotics and look cute. Boots? I haven’t been so lucky.

  • Speaking of wide-calf boots, Tara, there’s this place called Duo which tailors to ALL calf sizes! I can’t believe how much I love them because I have thicker-than-average calves but the rest or me is rather normal. It’s a pain to have to never wear boots just because of my calves.

Anyway, ShoeBlog just did a post about Duo Boots here: http://www.shoeblog.com/blog/duo-boots/

    :D
