Still thinking about splurging: Three pieces to buy now, before they’re all gone

I am all about keeping spending to a minimum, and in this economy, I think you’re going to see more and more sales on clothing, particularly higher end pieces. But there are times when waiting for the sale may not be the most prudent approach, because you risk not being able to find what you need in your size. What should you absolutely pay full price right now for? Three things.

Shorts. I know, it’s January and it’s cold outside, but the stores are full of summer clothes, and the good things will go fast. If you find yourself in need of shorts this year, now is the time to pick up a couple of pairs, because if you wait until the real shorts weather rolls around, it may be too late. Shopping now for shorts gives you the best selection, both in terms of style and color. If you REALLY want green Bermudas, grab them now. Extra bonus: on that first warm day, you will be able to toss on your new shorts and go outside! Perfect.

Bathing suit. Again, I know that it is hardly swimwear weather, but now is the perfect time to buy a bathing suit. Waiting until the weekend before the pool opens guarantees that you will buy in haste and very likely wind up hating what you bring home. Take some time now to go and have a proper fitting; this will guarantee that you get a suit that covers what you want covered. Shopping now for a suit also gives you the best selection.

Event dress. If you are going to a wedding or reunion this summer, start shopping now for a dress. Look for something that you can wear again, but don’t skimp; having a really terrific dress in your closet is a wardrobe asset. Look for a dress that you can style in various ways; a sleeveless dress can be worn for day or evening, with a shawl or sweater. Stick with shades that flatter but aren’t outrageous, for maximum flexibility.

Keep in mind that a closet full of sale pieces that don’t fit isn’t a workable wardrobe. You are better off paying full price for a dress that you wear all the time than buying five sale dresses that you never wear. Same goes for shorts and swimwear and — well, everything, really.

  • I’m going to Hawaii in April and I just yesterday gave myself permission to go ahead and get new shorts and a bathing-suit… for the first time in 3 years!

    That’s right- I’m worth it. ;)

  • You are so right on the shorts! I can’t tell you the number of times I’ve been caught out needing shorts later in the year and there are none to be had — and I live in southern California, where we can wear shorts about 9 months of the year! Even worse is if you gain or lose weight and the shorts you own no longer fit — I’m tempted to buy two sizes this year, just in case…

  • I always leave shorts to the last minute, and you are so right; they are always out of stock in my size or the decent colors. I may just give in and buy at full price this year at the beginning of (or before) the season.
