The beauty of layering

With Fall rapidly approaching, we’ll be breaking out the layers in no time. Believe you me, an effective use of layers can take an otherwise bland outfit to new heights of fashionista territory.

Lucky magazine recently included a layering feature in their Fall Fashion Guide entitled, “Getting Layers Right”. One of the things I love about Lucky magazine is their ability to create cool, new outfits by mixing unexpected shapes. However, as a work-at-home mother, sometimes the look is a little out of my comfort zone and/or paycheck.

(Can I get an AMEN?)

In the feature, Lucky highlighted six layering styles for fall:

1) Cropped top over cropped bottom

2) Wide top over narrow bottom

3) Long top over short bottom

4) Slouchy top over slouchy bottom

5) Flounce top over flounce bottom

6) Long top over long bottom

I’m intrigued by most of these silhouettes, so let’s dissect a few, shall we?

First off, the most important questions. Can you create these looks for your lifestyle? Sure! Is it possible that you already have the components for these layering styles in your closet? Absolutely!

The three layering styles most fresh and wearable in my book are cropped over cropped, slouchy over slouchy, and flounce over flounce. Take a look in your closet - it’s completely feasible that you already own a pair of cropped pants, a slouchy blouse and/or a flounce skirt.

Here are some inspirations for basic, wearable layers. Remember, these pieces are the foundation for your layered ensembles, not the entire outfit. (Hence the beauty of LAYERING.) You can always add favorite pieces from your own closet! (BONUS - all of these pieces can mix-and-match for a total of 9 outfits. We’ve got to get some bang for our buck, remember?)

Cropped jacket $79.00, Ann Taylor Loft
Cropped pants $26.50, Old Navy
Slouchy blouse $78.00,  J. Crew (This comes in several fantastic colors.)
Slouchy pants $79.00, Banana Republic
Flounce blouse $44.00, The Gap
Flounce Skirt $78.00, Anthropologie

  • I love fall. Summer is probably my favorite season, but I’m always ready for a season change and some trendy new clothing. :)

    Thanks for sharing.

  • I didn’t really get what ‘layering’ is… If you put on a top and, let’s say, a skirt, is it layering? If so, I don’t understand why you say fall is all about layering: I wear a bottom piece and a top one pretty much all year round.

  • I’m with Mariana. Layering is about multiple articles of clothing piled on the same body area, to put it bluntly. This is more about combinations of styles for top and bottom. An example of layering would be a cropped jacket over a sweater with a lace cami peeking out.

Nonetheless, these are nice style combos… though the slouchy with slouchy can look pretty big a nd sloppy sometimes.

  • Mariana and Ellen,

The image I created for this article included some fresh basics that you could use for your Fall layering strategy combined with items you already have in your closet, not a photo of actual layered ensembles.

As I wrote in the article:

Remember, these pieces are the foundation for your layered ensembles, not the entire outfit. (Hence the beauty of LAYERING.)

For example, the green cropped jacket and the cropped pants would look great with a blouse and scarf that you already own. Sorry for any confusion!

  • I like the idea of layering. It adds style and fashionable look to your outfit. I agree with Sarah that Lucky magazine is setting cool trends and is a great source for fashion tips and ideas.

  • oh no, why did you have to point out that the fall is approaching. Now I am sad.
I still want it to be summer, how is it, that, it is already mid august.

  • I LOVE FALL !! I love layering and boots and sweaters. Sigh. Bye bye hot summer.

I love crewnecks and jeans. That is my favorite outfit. Plus, I love the long sweater jackets and boots and you can dress those down or up. I found a great camel sweater jacket that I totally loved to death. I may be calling it the wrong thing, but it is belted and it comes to my knee. Very cute.

  • Oh PLEASE tell me those pants aren’t the new trend. Didn’t I see those on Mary Richards in 1978?

    Love layering though. That’s a keeper-trend.

  • I’m usually drooling over the thought of Fall clothes by this time of the year; we have another few weeks of warm weather, but then it’s ON! Personally I’m really excited vests (or “waistcoats” as I’ve heard them called recently) and Mary Janes are back in. Bring it!
Also, you’re doing a great job with this site! I can’t wait to see the next stuff coming up.
