Once you’ve picked out the right shorts, you’re half way dressed, but what goes on top? Answer: Pretty much anything!
When you’re pairing tops with shorts, keep a few things in mind. Balance your proportions; pair longer shorts with tailored tops, something with some structure. Shorter shorts are great with a tunic, but make sure that the hemline on your top hits well above the hemline of your shorts.
If you’re going super casual, a tee is a great compliment to shorts, but rather than opting for the usual crew neck or ribbed tank, look for a tee with some embellishment. This season, there are some terrific ruffled tees available. Or choose a V neck tee and layer it over a pretty camisole, either in a contrasting color or with a lacy trim.
Finally, think about color and print. A crisp white shirt or tee is a classic summer look, but some color — or a bold pattern — can change your entire look. Turquoise and coral are classic summer colors, with a retro vibe that’s just right this year. But anything bright and fruity and sunny is perfect for summer. Even the most basic tee is more fun in a delicious color.

I love a tunic top over a pair of long, slim shorts in a crisp fabric. A slightly flowing shirt flatters most everyone’s shape. One of my favorites is a white cotton tunic with a boat neck, slightly rounded sleeves and a subtle striping detail in the fabric — also from Ann Taylor LOFT.
