My husband and I are having a date tonight, and I have no idea what to wear (I have about six hours to decide, which should be plenty of time, but still). I am completely stumped, you all.
Here’s the scoop: We’re going to a charity auction for a group my husband is involved with, so this is essentially a work function for him. The event is dinner, a silent auction, a live auction, and a performance by Toby Keith. The whole shindig is taking place at a casino outside Oklahoma City.
Oh, and? There’s a pretty good possibility that we’ll get to meet Toby Keith.
Seriously, do you see why this is throwing me?
I have a hard time getting dressed for those in-between events, the ones that require something nicer than what I wear on a normal Tuesday but don’t quite warrant a cocktail dress. Date night is always tricky for me, partly because my husband and I do such oddball things for our dates. And work-related functions feel extra complicated because I don’t want to make my husband look bad.
(You can laugh at that, but I’m serious.)
At this point in the day, I’m building from the bottom up; I have a really cute pair of pink patent peep toe pumps that I haven’t had occasion to wear yet, and they seem perfect for this evening. Now I just need to find something to pair them with — cropped pants? skinny jeans? a pencil skirt? And then I need something on the top.
And of course there’s always my little black dress — if I wear it with silver sandals, it’s a little less dressed up and a little more simple chic.
In the end, I’ll probably wait until the last minute and then just pull on whatever seems like it will work. But I’m curious — what do you wear for date night? Does it depend on where you’re going? Or on what you’ve been wearing all day? Dish — and next week we’ll do a roundup of best date night outfits!

Uh…..what is this “date night” of which you speak? Just kidding. I don’t get out on many dates, seeing as our budget is stretched to the max to afford having me stay home to take care of our two little ones (and we have no family nearby for free babysitting), but I believe the last date night I went on was much more casual than your function: dinner and a movie. And I wore a knee-length jersey wrap dress and cute embellished flats.

If we’re tying “Date Night” with running errands (Costco!) then I usually wear pants and a cute top.
If it’s solely a date I either wear a dress, or dress pants and a pretty top.

For tonight, I would go with Simple Chic. Charity events here are usually more formal/dress up affairs, but if they’re not in your locale, Simple Chic is still impressive, elegant and perfect for non-casual functions.

I am loving the idea of a cute black dress with the pink patent toe pumps and some dangly earrings…and if you could tell us where you got those pumps, that would be great!
Susan says: The shoes came from Old Navy, believe it or not. It doesn’t look like they have the pink ones online any more, but they are on sale for $12.99, which is a steal.

I would rule out the cropped pants and skinny jeans for this occasion. The pencil skirt or a simple dress would be lovely.
It is better to be just a smidge overdressed than underdressed IMHO.
Date night dress truly depends on the event, but I always try a little harder to look nice for a date, than I do every other day that I am seen.

definitely NOT a MAXI DRESS…

CJ, that made me laugh. We will discuss the maxi dress soon, I promise.
I wore a navy blue shift dress and a pair of pink silk flats; my six-year-old said I looked very nice. So there you go!
