Splurge vs. save: Where to save

Categories: basics

Building a functional wardrobe means making smart choices about where to spend and where to save. A basic rule of thumb is this: Anything with a short shelf life should not be a splurge; save your money for pieces that will last more than one season.

So where can you cut corners?

Tanks and tees

Old Navy tank, $12.50

No matter how much you pay for them, tank tops and tee shirts have a limited life span, particularly white tanks and tees. On the other hand, a really cute tank (like the one pictured here) can change the look of an outfit. But don’t skimp on fit; even an inexpensive tee or tank needs to fit properly or it’s no bargain. Make sure that your tanks fit properly through the bust and that tees hit you in the right place across the shoulders — and always make sure the hem is long enough to keep you covered when you sit down.

Jeans

Gap jeans, $69.50 currently $49.50

Great jeans don’t have to cost $200. Again, the key is to find the right fit; look for a mid-rise with a boot-cut leg, for the most flattering silhouette. And stick with a dark rinse, one without any fancy whiskering. If you’re wearing jeans to work, look for trouser jeans rather than standard boot-cut jeans. Finally, remember Sarah’s smart advice and make friends with your tailor; even the most inexpensive jeans can easily be hemmed or taken in at the waist for a perfect fit.

Trendy tops

Forever 21 silk/cotton blouse, $22.80

This fall, ruffles are everywhere; if you’re looking to participate in the trend but aren’t sure you’ll still feel ruffly next fall, look for lower end versions of the trend. This ruffled blouse from Forever21 is a great example; the over-the-top color and style give your closet a shot of fun, for under $25.00. If you’re looking for a trendy piece, something of-the-moment, look places like F21 and H&M, rather than springing for the designer alternative.

Your turn! Where do you cut corners? How to you make your low-end finds look like high-end splurges? And coming next week: Laundry strategies to keep your bargain pieces looking great.
