Here comes the sun (so stock up on sunscreen)

Categories: basics

Summer’s here, and apparently I’m going to spend every single day at the pool, at least if my kids have their way. I suppose there could be worse places to spend the summer, right?

Right.

Because we’ve been going to the pool every single day, I’ve been thinking a lot about sunscreen, both for me and for my kids. I’m a big believer in sunscreen — I’m fair skinned and I burn easily, and the last thing I want is to peel or wrinkle. So I am religious about slathering on the sunscreen, and I’ve found a few products that I love deeply and truly.

Ready? Here you go.

Neutrogena Spectrum+ Advanced Sunblock Lotion SPF 100+

Neutrogena makes the best sunscreens, for everyday and for the pool. Their new line is lightweight and non-greasy and offers complete, lasting coverage. I use it on my face, neck and chest. Perfect.

Coppertone SPORT Lotion SPF 50

There’s no school like the old school: we used Coppertone when I was a kid, and that smell still takes me back. Coppertone SPORT lasts and lasts, but it goes on dry, so there’s no sticky residue.

Clinique Long Last Glosswear SPF 15

Don’t forget your lips! Clinique’s Long Lasg Glosswear comes in light, wearable shades that last and last. Go bright with your sunglasses and big hat and you’ll look like a movie star.

Yes to Carrots Hydrating Body Lotion with SPF 30

Yes to Carrots is my favorite brand name ever; it’s so fun to say! And this lotion is fun to wear, for everyday, because sun screen isn’t just for the pool. I wear this on all the days when we’re going to be out and about running errands or just doing our thing. It has a pleasant, clean smell and goes on smooth and soft.

Remember: it takes a full ounce of sunscreen to completely coat the average adult. That’s about a shot glass full. Reapply every hour when you’re out at the beach or pool or lake. Use the right products the right way and you’ll have fun in the sun this summer without wrinkles next summer.

  • I am loving the powder sunscreen. So easy to apply all day over make up…and sooo easy to swipe over my toddlers face, neck and arms. I still use ‘real’ sunscreen for the pool. But for everyday in your purse, this stuff rocks!

  • ditto the neutrogena sunscreen for face. their new line of baby sunblock is the ONLY stuff i’ve found that doesn’t burn my preschooler’s sensitive skin. i’d recommend it to anyone with eczema. (though you should perhaps be aware that i’m just a mom, not an allergist :))

  • I’ve used the Neutrogena Spectrum+Face SPF 100 and I’m not happy with it at all. I apply all my sunscreens at least 20 min prior to going outdoors so it’ll soak in. Well, this stuff doesn’t soak in. Forget using this product if you are going to be exercising outdoors and sweating. I use it when I run and row (crew) and I sweat it right off my face. And it’s not clear when you sweat it off - oh no. It’s a milky white. So gross. I hate this product.

  • I’m so sorry to hear that!

My husband uses the Coppertone Sport when he rides, and is really happy with it. I use Neutrogena’s Ultra Sheer Dry Touch sunblock when I run, and the Spectrum+ at the pool (where I am typically sitting in the shade with a big hat on). I’ve also had good luck with the baby stick formulas for exercise, the ones that are titanium dioxide based — they typically won’t run or rinse off.

  • I think everyone should visit this site, and read about the dangers of many sunscreens which use oxybenzone and retinol AND have false claims of protection. Neutrogenia got bad marks for both of these offenses.

here is the link for the page with neutro. products. Click on the left hand links to see the safest, highest rated screens and the poorest rated ones.
