Hot weather chic

Categories: basics

J. Crew chino shorts

We’ve had over three straight weeks of 100+ degree temperatures here in Oklahoma City. On Monday the weather service just gave up and issued a heat advisory that stretched all the way through Friday night.

It’s hot, yo.

Getting dressed in weather like this is hard. I spend the first half of my day in some combination of running clothes (shorts and a sports bra) and swimsuits (bikini and cotton dress). I also spend the first half of my day sweaty and covered in sunscreen. Of course, that’s what summer is all about, right? Right!

Eventually, though, I need to shower and go places like the grocery or the bookstore or whatever part of my house is coolest, and that’s when it gets difficult. Because other than a swimsuit or running shorts, what do you wear when the outdoors feels like the surface of the sun?

I polled Twitter yesterday and the consensus was that when it’s this hot, we’re all choosing cool over cute. But we’re also looking for pieces that are cute and cool. In other words, as much as we don’t want to be hot, we’re not willing to spend the day in those running shorts.

I was glad to hear that.

So what are you all wearing to stay cool this summer?

A tank or tee with a skirt is a big favorite — this is my go-to look in the summer. It’s like the more grown-up version of shorts and a tee. Right now I’m in love with this white skirt from Old Navy — I’ve been wearing it everywhere.

Dresses: Everything from a simple sundress to a maxi dress. Dresses are great for working moms; even a sundress can go to the office with a cardi over it (after all, offices are cold in summer). And a dress, simply by virtue of being a dress, is a little more polished than shorts or a tank top — even if it’s just a simple sundress. Victoria’s Secret has some great maxi dresses, in beautiful prints and bold colors, which is a good way to cover up without overheating.

Shorts: I’ve fallen back in love with my shorts this summer (because hello hot weather!) and I’m not the only one. Isabel Kallman (who is truly one of the chicest women I know) is a big fan of J. Crew’s chino shorts — and so am I. And they’re on sale right now, in some really fantastic colors (I want the hot pink ones pictured above).

What are you wearing this summer? Are you still feeling chic, or is it just too darn hot?

  • I hear you on the heatwave! We have a heat advisory too in Central Ohio. The pink shorts are so cute! Wish I had a pair right now.

I’ve been living in dresses and skirts for the past 2 weeks. It’s blazin out there!

  • I’m a skirts and sundress girl, but that’s laregly b/c I have such a hard time finding shorts that fit and are not too short. Maybe I’ll check out those J Crew hot pink shorts…

The VS bra top sundresses are perfect for the weekends. One less layer to worry about.

  • I love the look of a maxi dress but they are just too hot–I don’t want anything touching my legs. I stick to sundresses and skirts when I’m not in my swimsuit. I’m a huge fan of this dress from Target: which comes in several colors. I have it in black, and it’s super-comfortable and just the right length; it works for running errands or with a cardigan for the office.

The previous commenter mentioned VS bra top dresses, but I have a problem with their fit–they tend to squash “the girls,” and my girls don’t have a lot to squash if you know what I mean.

  • Shorts here…dresses and skirts always make me feel too dressed up. Target has some great lightweight bermuda shorts that I have in every color.

Susan, I don’t envy you all in the middle of the country. Here in the Northeast, we’re only on our 2nd day of 95+ temps and it’s brutal!

  • I totally second Leigh on that Target dress. I have it in black and wear it CONSTANTLY. Last week I wore it to my daughter’s swim lesson at our outdoor pool with casual but cute sandals and a simple necklace, and one of the other moms (who I didn’t know at all) actually stopped me after class to say she’d wanted to tell me all week how “classy and chic” I always look (”even at the pool!”). So nice. And the dress could not be more comfortable and easy-wash.

  • Tailored shorts are my new summer favorites too. A colour like black even works for semi-formal events if styled correctly.
