Plus-Size: Tips and Fabulous Pieces

Categories: bottoms, dresses, tops

This week, I dove into some internet research on plus-size styles, and I must say, I’m a little alarmed at most of the plus-sized “tips” out there.  Several of the articles I read seemed to lump all plus-size women into one generic category, which seems a little odd to me.

Luckily, I stumbled across a piece in Good Housekeeping about how to flatter different plus-size shapes according to a few different body types; rectangle, hourglass and pear. Here’s what I found out.

For the Rectangle body shape (broad shoulders and thick middles):

  • Bold jewelry (to draw the eyes upward)
  • Fitted blazer (to slim the shoulders)
  • Wrap dress (to create a waist and add shape)
  • Flared skirt (to add curves)
  • Pointy-toed pumps (to lengthen legs)

For the Hourglass body shape (smallest part of body is waist):

  • V-neck tops (accentuate cleavage)
  • Swing coat (to hide hips)
  • Silky shirts (softens bustline without concealing curves)
  • Sweater around the neck (soften broad shoulders)
  • Ankle boots (to extend line of the leg)

For the Pear body shape (smaller torso, larger hips and derriere):

  • Wide necklines (to widen narrow shoulders)
  • Colorful, dangly jewelry (to draw attention to the face)
  • Fitted blazer with accentuated shoulders (to add shape to upper body)
  • Wide-leg pants (to accent smaller waist)
  • Blouse with collar up (creates width)

Armed with my new knowledge, I set out to find some great plus-size pieces for this fall and winter. (I originally planned to find 8-10 pieces, but I went a little crazy. The things I will do for you, ladies.)

  • [...] 3. Plus-sized tips and cute fall fashions.  [...]

Can You Say Carpal Tunnel? : whoorl  |  November 14th, 2008 at 7:38 am

  • And there you have our limited shopping resources- Lane Bryant, Old Navy for affordables and Nordstrom or Macy’s/Neiman Marcus for splurges. Did you know that at Old Navy you can only buy the plus sized line on line and if it doesn’t fit you have to wait to exchange it by mail?

There aren’t a lot of tips out there for plus sized women because the fashion industry and the media don’t talk about us. It’s as though if they were to give us “tips” they would be condoning our fatness which isn’t acceptable. There are a whole host of body positive sites that talk about this and about great places to shop or get bargains. AND the best part is they aren’t slipping diet ads in as a not so subtle message that who we are is not okay.

With that said, I have at least 5 of these items you listed. And also, I didn’t mean to rant but I have a lot of feelings on this matter.

    sizzle  |  November 14th, 2008 at 8:44 am

  • Are you kidding about Old Navy? That is horrible! (I thought they had the cutest items by far, but what a pain in the ass!)

  • I just receieved the Talbots Christmas catalog this week. I was surprised at how much of it I actually liked, since Talbots can be stuffy, and they do carry Plus-Sizes for many of their pieces.

I have also had good luck shopping online at Jessica London and Chadwicks. I also like CJ Banks for staples like tshirts, and casual pants. It took me a long time to even walk into the store since so many of their clothes are ummm…embellished, for lack of a better term (think sequined holiday sweaters) but they carry both tall and extra tall plus sizes, which is great.

Also, JC Penney has a good selection of plus-sizes items. I have had good luck finding more trendy things there that I don’t want to spend an arm and a leg on.

If I am looking for a really good quality suit, I will look to Jones of New York or Ellen Tracy.

Sorry for the novel here. I just know that there are a lot of other woman like me, who are plus-sized, but still love to shop, love clothes and refuse to wear a mumu.

Sarah, I have to say, your round up of plus sized items, at a wide variety of price points was great. I really appreciate it and now I am just looking for a way to justify that red dress from Neimans. That is gorgeous.

  • Kiyonna online is OK too…

    Laurie  |  November 14th, 2008 at 9:11 am

  • Yep, pretty much anything plus-sized from Old Navy, JJill etc. has be ordered online. Let us not even go into a discussion about size 11 shoes.

    gorillabuns  |  November 14th, 2008 at 9:18 am

  • Word to Sizzle! Oh, how about options for those of us under 5′4″? Apparently, all plus-size women must also be tall. Except that’s not true. It’s incredibly frustrating to try to find pants, and shirts that fit my shorter torso. Don’t even get me started on lingerie.

I shop primarily at Lane Bryant, Old Navy, and Macy’s. Lane Bryant and Old Navy carry petite plus-size pants, but I have to order online and return them. It’s mostly hassle-free, but the waiting is what kills me. Eddie Bauer has some plus-size options, as does L.L. Bean, but they’re limited. J.Jill is another place I love to splurge.

    AmandaL  |  November 14th, 2008 at 10:08 am

  • you know, I have found some nice stuff at Torrid and Avenue…Avenue even carries Seven jeans.

    rebecca  |  November 14th, 2008 at 12:16 pm

  • You should also check out Kiyonna for plus size styles, as well as Talbots. I wear a lot of Talbots pieces at work (unfortunately) because I am young and plus size. I wish I could be stylish without looking garish, but apparently all plus size girls want everyone to look at their boobs all the time.

    Ariella  |  November 14th, 2008 at 1:21 pm

  • My two go too favorites are Ulla Popkin and JJill, both of which carry plus sizes. I’m of the school that would rather by a few quality pieces for more money than to have to replace my wardrobe yearly. Old Navy has terrible quality and now that you can’t try on their stuff, they lost me as a customer, even for their cheap beaters.

Right now I’m wearing a pair of Ulla Popkin jeans from 2003 that are in perfect condition. You wouldn’t find that in Lane Bryant stuff.

    margalit  |  November 14th, 2008 at 3:41 pm

  • I love JJill.Their pieces are classic and well made. I’m also a fan of Target. I have several pair of Merona label trousers and Mossimo jeans from Target that fit way better than many higher priced versions.

    jac  |  November 14th, 2008 at 6:45 pm

  • Sarah- Not joking about the on line bullshit at Old Navy. It’s more than just the wait time for exchange that bugs me; it’s the feeling of not being “good enough” for them to carry that line of clothing in their stores. It’s like if you get to be too fat, you aren’t allowed to be seen in public at their stores. I cry bullshit to that!

Others have mentioned good options for plus sized clothes and the limitations of finding classic, non-bedazzled pieces. I’m with AmandaL- I am 5′3″ and should basically marry tailor to save me from all the alterations I need for clothes that are too long.

    sizzle  |  November 14th, 2008 at 10:12 pm

  • I hate blousy, potato sack shirts for plus-size women. If anything, it’s the skinny people that can pull those off, and the majority of plus-size clothes should have more structure, not less, IMO (so, minus a couple of those shirts, good work Sarah!). That said, I shop at Target, Old Navy, Lane Bryant, and Ann Taylor Loft (XL in the store, XXL online). My new favorite coat for winter is this one from Target. I also got a fantastic satin trenchcoat with a waist-cinching belt from *gulp* Wal-Mart. Seriously, I will shop anywhere.

    Kaye  |  November 14th, 2008 at 10:43 pm

  • I used to be plus size, and I always think I looked my best whenever I wore really structured apparel. The blousy stuff made me look pregnant or sloppy. I used to have decent luck at Avenue. Some of their tops were well made and slightly more fitted. I also love Dillards woman (Just bypass the elastic pants, they have some other nicer things).

Another question: Where do you go for petites plus sizes? I am looking for stuff for my mom, and usually I just buy outfits and get them tailored.

And two rant-y points: Why is it that mens clothes run in a spectrum of sizes, but women’s clothes come in a special section of the store and it is always near maternity? It’s insulting! Second rant: At Saks Fifth Ave (the one in NYC), they have a whole floor dedicated to Plus sizes. What is it called? Salon Z. Where is it? The top floor of Saks. When you get there, all of the trendy music that they play in the other sections stops, as does the ratio of people to help you wade your way through the designers. The rest of the store looks like a space age shopping experience, and Salon Z is reminiscent of K-Mart. I went there once, and never went back.

    Jess  |  November 15th, 2008 at 10:42 am

  • I have a very good friend who is plus size and was trying to squeeze into size 15 juniors but the fit was all wrong and the styles were too young (jeans with glitter and embroidery)! I went shopping with her to try to help, but everything was way too matronly (she is 19). Finally, we stumbled upon Torrid in the mall and I have to say she looks HOTTT and trendy now. Unfortunately, she is also a tad short, so she had to taylor some things, but it was worth it…she really looks good and her confidence shot up big time. I was ashamed that stores where I shop ignored that she even exists.

    Gia  |  November 15th, 2008 at 12:44 pm

  • What also irks me is that very often stores think that just because we’re plus size, we want dress down to the floor or clothes made from inferior materials and structure. I’ve 5′41/2″, but I’ve got short legs. Ok, so I have to buy petite pants. Now, used to be I could do that and not have to hem them. But have they decided that petite short has grown 2 inches in height???? Suddenly the PS is still 2 inches too long. Someone mentioned Jessica London and other catagogues. WHY do they not have plus size models wearing their clothes? I want to see what it looks like on someone like me, not some size 4.

    JD  |  November 16th, 2008 at 8:44 am

  • Ha ha! I just bought that near exact red dress at Bloomingdales. You have to be a serious detective to find decent plus size selection in any price range. I could write a novel.

    jenB  |  November 16th, 2008 at 10:12 pm

  • THANK YOU for this post. I ordered two of the Old Navy items. Please, God let them fit, I don’t want the humiliation of being turned away in the store if they don’t fit.

Just a suggestion - a lot of us taller/bigger girls also have big feet (Size 10-12 on up). What would you thin about doing a post on larger-sized foot apparel? I pretty much buy all of mine online through Nordstroms because going to Dillards or Nine West and having to say, “just show me what you do have in an 11,” and picking shoes that way sort of sucks.

    Lyndsay  |  November 17th, 2008 at 7:45 am

  • I agree with what Sizzle said. The first time I bought from Old Navy online I ordered a denim pencil skirt and blue jeans and just guessed at the size I would need. Well they both ended up being too big and I had to send them back, but by the time they got there, they were out of the size I actually did need. So I missed out on the sale. However, I’ve since bought like 15 shirts from their site and have loved about 12 of them. Is it fair that I have to order them online? No. But maybe if I keep buying and ordering along with others, the demand will grow so that they decide to allow them in the real stores.

Otherwise I do my shopping at Lane Bryant, Target, or JCPenney. Lane Bryant is the best because they always have coupons for $25 off $75 purchase, $50 off $150 purchase, and $75 off $225 purchase. And I also love it when they have their bras buy 2 get 2 free.

Target is good for price, but their selection is quite small. It’s better than it used to be, but still not that great.

JCPenney I only recently checked out because of a BlogHer review and I was quite happy with what I got. And everything was on sale.

So yes we are limited in where we can shop, but at least there are more options than there used to be.

    Carrisa  |  November 17th, 2008 at 7:49 am

  • Yeah, I occasionally buy stuff from Roaman’s (a lot of their stuff is hideous, although I suppose someone must be buying it, but they have wide and wide-calf shoes and boots, and some other decent cheap stuff), and NONE of the models are even remotely plus-size. So aggravating.

Land’s End can also be a decent place to get quality plus-size stuff, although it’s aggravating that mostly you have to shop by mail.

Check out http://www.prettypear.com and http://www.fatshionista.com for sites that focus only on plus-size fa(t)shion.

    tadpoledrain  |  November 17th, 2008 at 8:15 am

  • That red dress is absolutely gorgeous. I love it!

Lane Bryant has the BEST dress pants. They are the only ones that are actually cut to fit my shape (narrow waist, bigger rear and thighs). I don’t even bother going anywhere else anymore.

On top of all these complaints above, I’d like to point out that not all “plus sized” women have big boobs! I can’t wear most of the plus sized tops because I’m not a DD cup. Luckily, I can wear the “regular” sized shirts in XL, so I get away with that.

    Robyn  |  November 17th, 2008 at 12:20 pm

  • for ladies with thin calves or for those on the plus side, check out DUO Boots
    http://www.duoboots.com

they make boots specifically based on your calf measurements - so the fit is great. They have stores in the UK and Amsterdam and international online shopping/shipping. Perhaps there is something similar in the US?

I had some wedge boots made by Duo and I am really happy with them. They arrived in one week!

    sunny  |  November 18th, 2008 at 5:35 am

  • ps: at H&M Europe there is a line called BIB (big is beautiful) .. does the US H&M have this line? It’s pretty good.

5 years ago H&M rarely had sizes over 40 (10) in their main collection but now it is very common to see 42, 44, 46 & even 48 (12,14,16 & 18) in most styles.

    sunny  |  November 18th, 2008 at 5:39 am

  • Old Navy used to carry the plus size line in the stores, but since they don’t want people to know that they make clothes for us chubby girls, they stopped carrying plus sizes in the stores. I doubt that they will be changing that anytime soon.

    Brandy  |  November 20th, 2008 at 9:50 am

  • I love and adore the Lane Bryant ruffled bib top you have here. I got the black in store and have not seen it on the website. I just bought it in red and silver too. Thanks!

    Clio  |  November 21st, 2008 at 8:03 am

  • The H&M in Toronto has plus sizes, no idea about the US.

    jenB  |  November 21st, 2008 at 6:43 pm

  • I’m a size 18 or 20 who’s only 5′0. I love, love, love the capri’s, because with a short 25″ inseam, they fit me perfect for pants!

I’ll echo what lots of others have said…just because I’m plus-size doesn’t mean I’m an Amazonian!

    CTalley  |  November 22nd, 2008 at 12:28 pm

  • I’m another one of the plus-sized petites out there, and it is so hard to find shirts that are not hanging to my knees or pants that are a foot too long. I’ve had good luck with jeans from Target. My favorite thing is to hit the big department stores whenever I’m near a city, because that’s where I find the nice stuff. For example, I shopped it up at the Macy’s in SF when I was at BlogHer, and found two dresses that have clothed me for every special occasion since July.

    Velma  |  November 25th, 2008 at 8:44 pm

  • I am a plus size woman too and finding stylish, elegant clothing was always a problem. So, I decided to start a website to help curvy women like me find gorgeous dresses and outfits. There is no reason why plus size women shouldn’t also be beautiful and well-dressed. You will find clothing from featured brands with a signature sense of style tailored to large size fashion in plus sizes - all in one place! Please let me know what you think by visiting
    http://www.womenplusdresses.com
Your input is very important and with your help we can create a place for plus size women to shop, a place where they will find clothing that make them feel BEAUTIFUL and SEXY, not hiding behind their baggy clothes. Don’t forget to check latest special offers and free deals! Shop & Save!

    Lana  |  December 13th, 2008 at 10:52 am

  • Shopping online is probably the WORST way for plus-size women to shop, so it’s funny/sad that so many stores move that department to website only. As you said, the body shapes are always different and trying clothes on is essential. Yet it costs money to ship it back.

That Neiman Marcus dress is so cute, though! If only I could afford it… http://www.apparelncs.com/rd_p?p=186122&t=9518&a=23960-workitmom&gift=23960
