Hate the dressing room? MyShape.com has the solution

One morning about six years ago, I found myself in an Ann Taylor dressing room, trying on jeans, with a bored toddler. Charlie was strapped safely in his umbrella stroller, which was taking up most of the floor space in the wee dressing room, while I tried to find some pants that fit my waist AND hips. Charlie was being very sweet and quiet and compliant, and I was patting myself on the back for having a kid that I could take shopping with me.

Until he unbuckled the safety belt and scrambled out of the stroller and under the dressing room door and took off into the store.

I chased him out of the dressing room in my underwear. And then I bought three pairs of pants without even trying them on. True story.

That was the last time I took a child shopping with me for anything other than his own clothes. Because no one needs to see me running through the mall in my undies.

Shopping can be a nightmare for a busy mom (and honestly, what mom isn’t busy?). The trifecta of post-baby body, new mommy lifestyle, and a wee person who does understand why you need to try on just one more pair of pants can make finding a pair of jeans that fit seem like the search for the Holy Grail. Instead of giving up and just wearing your yoga pants, again, check out myShape.com.

myShape.com is online shopping customized for your size and shape. You answer a few questions about your personal style, your measurements, and your fit preferences, and then myShop.com creates a personal shop for you, stocked with what you need in the sizes that fit. Everything is shipped to your home where you can try things on in peace and privacy, without the baby running off into the middle of the Ann Taylor petites section. You can also try things with pieces you already own, which helps you make better decisions about how things will really work in your closet.

Want to see myShop.com in action? Susanne Jackson compared mall shopping to myShape.com shopping; you can see her the video of her shopping trip — and her subsequent trip to myShape.com — here.

What’s your strategy for shopping with kids? Or are you just squooshing into those yoga pants?

  • I think I am measuring wrong because the website keeps telling me I am a shape H and, uh, the clothes and stuff are really wrong. Or, maybe I have been wearing inappropriate clothing for 20 years, but it’s kinda hard to tell.

I’d totally pay for someone none-creepy to come accurately measure my body parts. Susan and Sarah, got any bloggy business coming up in Vancouver? :-)

  • my sister told me about myshape - she got together with some girlfriends and they all measured each other. so i did it with some friends of mine and it definitely does help me figure out what will work and what i can look at say thanks but no thanks!

of course finding something that does work and then buying it in multiple colors works too. :)
