Boyfriend jeans: A how-to for grown up women

I bought a pair of boyfriend jeans this week; I was totally won over by the soft, comfortable fit. I’m typically a skinny jeans girl, and while I still love my skinny jeans (easy to dress up and dress down!) I needed something super casual, for football games and afternoons at the park with my kids.

Boyfriend jeans are a classic college girl look — so how do you wear them if your last day on a college campus was 20 years ago?

Best-Priced Online Boutiques

I’m an online shopper through and through. I’m not really into crowded malls, and would much rather spend my time sitting on my couch drinking a latte while purchasing this season’s most darling [insert clothing item here]. Plus, with the majority of my favorite stores implementing easy and free returns, why not?

However, I’ve been stuck in an online retailer rut - not really venturing out into new online shopping territory. That is, until Lucky Magazine published their 100 under $100 online shopping guide in their July issue. Woohoo! More ways to spend my money!

Trend Watch - Neon

I have to be honest with you. It took everything in my power not to entitle this post, Absolutely Crazy Trend Watch (WHAT ARE YOU PEOPLE THINKING?) - Neon. Let’s be serious for a second. Neon? Like the Day-Glo Eighties phenomenon? Who wants to re-hash that nightmare?

Well, apparently, W magazine, Harper’s Bazaar and many other fine publications are more than willing to shove neon right back in our faces.

(Looking for a rock to crawl under.)

Is it possible to alter this trend to make it work for the majority of women who would rather not be reminded of acid green Ray-Bans and jelly bracelets from our school days? Of course we can! This blog is called The Working Closet, isn’t it?

Plus-Size: Tips and Fabulous Pieces

Categories: bottoms, dresses, tops

This week, I dove into some internet research on plus-size styles, and I must say, I’m a little alarmed at most of the plus-sized “tips” out there.  Several of the articles I read seemed to lump all plus-size women into one generic category, which seems a little odd to me.

Luckily, I stumbled across a piece in Good Housekeeping about how to flatter different plus-size shapes according to a few different body types; rectangle, hourglass and pear. Here’s what I found out.

Denim 101: Find your perfect jeans

Jeans. Skinny, wide-leg, boot cut, trouser, cigarette, boyfriend, straight leg…the list goes on and on. Remember what jean options were available before before designer labels took over the market? Yeah, neither do I. If I do recall correctly, all body types were essentially forced to wear the same styles and it didn’t make for very attractive looks.

Today, your denim choices are virtually unlimited, which is perfect for finding the exact pair to suit your personal style and shape, but the process can be a little daunting. There are A LOT of jeans out there. However, you’ve come to the right place. With the help of Shopbop’s denim tutor, take a deep breath and a long look at what kind of jeans will work on your type of body.

The season’s best coats

First things first, let’s all give a hearty congratulations to Metalia, the official Working Closet Accessory Queen. I think she should have a plaque made for her office, yes?

Besides the fact that it was NINETY DEGREES this week, I can’t escape the myriad of magazines and catalogs showcasing some of the most beautiful outerwear options I’ve seen in recent years. I figure, maybe if I write about said coats, the weather might actually cooperate and cool down a bit. (Please hear my prayer, weather gods.)

The Fab 5 (Give or take a few.)

I recently read an article in In Style magazine about The Fab 5 pieces every woman should have in their closet. I can’t disagree - they listed five classic, go-to items, but I think some could be open to interpretation.

Let’s interpret, shall we?

The five items listed were:

1. Little Black Dress
2. Cardigan
3. White Button-Front Shirt
4. Jeans
5. Black Suit

Do you have all five of these items in your closet? It’s true, with the right accessories, these articles of clothing can get you through almost everything, but I’d like to add some food for thought. Before we start, it’s important to point out that these are the types of items that you should expect to spend more of your fashion budget on due to their longevity in your closet.

It’s Monday, and I’m trying to finish my taxes and get the laundry caught up and find my husband’s passport (don’t ask). In other words, I’m having one of those days where I have precisely five minutes to get ready and not a single second after that to do so much as check my lip gloss.

Sound familiar?

Today I have a random assortment of tips and tricks for you, for days just like today, plus some great news about things you can win.

Tips
I learned something interesting recently, about how to find the Perfect Jeans, that pair that makes everyone say, “Have you lost weight?” and “Wow your butt looks FANTASTIC.” And honestly, it’s so simple that it makes me want to cry, because how did I not realize this before?!?

When you are shopping for jeans, look for three things: fit, length and rise. Yes yes, you say, we knew all that — but wait! There’s a strategy here.

Working at home means you CAN wear yoga pants to the office

One of the hardest parts of working from home is balancing the working part and the home part. And — let’s face it — it’s the home part that makes it hard. During a normal work-at-home day, we not only do the work that pays the bills, we also clean and cook and sort laundry and hug sticky children. And we sit on the floor an awful lot, and sometimes even venture outside.

That is a lot to get dressed for.

Most of the time, moms default to dressing for the messiest possible kid thing. I see moms all the time who look like they are ready to fingerpaint with a hyperactive toddler — they are wearing worn out sweatpants and stained tee shirts, as though they are just waiting to have something disgusting wiped on them. And while motherhood is often about the wiping of the disgusting substances, you don’t have to turn yourself into a walking Kleenex. In fact, I wish you wouldn’t.
