Hi. I'm Leah and I'm expecting my first baby in December. I've often called my career as a book editor my "dream job," but the closer I get to my son's arrival, the more I'm open to revising that definition, especially once I'm in the thick of trying to balance full-time, first-time motherhood with a part-time office job.

What kinds of music do your kids listen to?

Last weekend we took the baby to his first outdoor concert. The occasion was a free festival for kids, and although all of the main acts were definitely kid-friendly, only one band–the Sippycups–specialized in music geared directly to kids. This got us talking about the kinds of music we grew up with (me: Jerry Jeff Walker and Kenny Rogers; him: the Rolling Stones and the Who), and how much more memorable and formative that “real” music was compared to the tapes (and records!) full of goofy, sugarcoated renderings of those same-old, age-old nursery rhymes we all know. (Don’t get me wrong; the “Itsy Bitsy Spider” forever holds a piece of my heart, poor thing, but you have to admit that “Yellow Submarine” is far more provocative no matter your age.)

Because we’re both music lovers, people have sent us all manner of tunes and beats for the baby–everything from warmed-over classics to U2 songs turned lullabyes to collections inspired by children’s books. Most of it we haven’t even opened yet, although not out of fear or disgust but because there’s already so much in our library that, although not made for kids, is nevertheless great for kids.

Our latest family favorite has been a homemade mix we titled “Dancing in the Kitchen” featuring songs by the Shins, the Ting Tings, Michael Franti and Spearhead, Bobby McFerrin and Yo-Yo Ma, the Proclaimers, Little Feat, Mika, and Martin Sexton (whom we met and personally thanked for his music at the festival last weekend). The way we look at it, as long as the tunes get you up and dancing (or make the baby sleepy, verrrry sleeeepy), why limit your family to music that only the kids enjoy? Yes, you have to be a little careful about throwing in just any old CD (”Mommy, what does OPP stand for?”), but there’s no reason to lock away your old favorites to make room for “Elmo’s Party Funtime Album,” the 12-CD set.

Tell me: What kind of music do your kids listen to or, rather, what kind of music do you listen to with your kids? Does your family have any favorites among the “real” music you enjoy? Do you know of any good crossover albums made for kids by mainstream musicians (e.g., Jack Johnson, They Might Be Giants, the Barenaked Ladies)? Help us build our family music library in a way that won’t have two-thirds of us plugging our ears three-thirds of the time!

[p.s. Thanks for the suggestions on flying with an infant. Our trip was a success thanks to your tips and to one very agreeable baby!]

  • Our kids listen to our music. It’s funny to see their different preferences.

Emily is all about dance music (preferably sung by a girl).
Nathan likes the more mellow stuff (Jason Mraz, etc.) as well as the dance stuff.
Graham is more into rock/R&B, but will kick it to the dance stuff (preferably old school) as well.

  • I listen to just about everything, but Punk Rock is my true love. My 4 year old LOVES it, but I have to be selective with what bands/songs I let her listen too. Her current favorite music is geared more towards the tween set…Taylor Swift, Miley Cyrus, but lately she’s also been diggin Boom Boom Pow by The Black Eyed Peas, pretty much anything by Lady GaGa, and Weezer.
I did the whole Nursery Rhyme thing till she was about 2 years old and started showing more interest in the music I listened to. She learned just about every lyric there was on those kid CD’s, so I knew I’d have to be careful once she started listening to mainstream music. I also let her know what songs are okay to sing at school, and what songs she should only sing at home. She’s pretty good about that stuff.

  • I just love music and languages, so I have a soft spot in my wallet for Putamayo CDs - the mild grownup ones and the “dreamland” and “playground” ones for kids. Also Ellipsis Arts Lullaby series. And Western and Eastern classic instrumentals, Christmas classics, classic rock (Cat Stevens, John Denver, …), etc. We have some typical kiddy CDs but I can’t stand a lot of them because of the jing-bang quality or the screechy Dora-esque voices. When the kids jump in the basement, they listen to dance music (nice and loud). At around age 2, they became enamored with the Wizard of Oz, and demand to hear the soundtrack CD at least every other day. And beginning around age 2, I introduced them to some kiddy song videos - our favorites are Cedarmont Kids (also available on CD, not irritating thank goodness). Baby Genius has a couple decent ones as well. They also like to watch country videos while winding down in the evenings, if I’ll let them.

  • We are all about ‘77 punk and old Ska (Specials, Madness…) and Irish punk as well as Irish folk; I also love some techno/industrial, most new wave and my husband is into reggae and some “new” metal. We have introduced her to everything except new metal (ugh) Our daughter loves Flogging Molly and the Pub Crawlers (her favorite seems to be “The Last Sasketchawan Pirate” - a truly funny song).

But mostly, she hears classical music. We put it on more than anything for her (the car remains my domain, though I do watch what I play when she’s in it). My husband admits, however, to knowing all of the words to most of the Raffi CD that was a gift. So, it’s a mixed bag.
