with Nataly
Hi, I am Nataly and I am the co-founder of Work It, Mom!
I write the daily Work It, Mom! Blog where I talk about issues affecting working moms, goings on in our Work It, Mom! community, new site features, updates, and contests. I also share my own juggle between work and family and love to see members jump in with comments. Come and visit often!
Nataly's profile on Work It, Mom!
I spent the past two days presenting Work It, Mom! and connecting with other media women entrepreneurs at this incredible event called All Things Media. The purpose of the event was to bring together some great women starting media companies (hey, someone thought I should be invited, yay for them!) with investors and media partners. I won’t go into a lot of details and will only say that when women get together with the goal of supporting each other the empowerment and the energy are insanely amazing.
I met some wonderful women at the event, many of whom are working mothers. As I was coming home late last night I found myself replaying some of the bits of conversations we had or I’d overheard between them and thought I’d share them here. (You know, kind of like Overheard in the Office, but a working mom edition.)
On Halloween…
“My husband and my two kids are coming to the airport to meet me on Friday so we can go trick-or-treating together. The kids will already be wearing their costumes since I’ll be cutting it so close. I feel like a superhero that I found a way to make it home for Halloween.”
“I don’t know what I will do if I miss my connecting flight and don’t make it home for Halloween. The guilt will eat me.”
Mom A: “Did you decorate your house for Halloween?”
Mom B: “I didn’t even buy candy yet!”
Mom A: “Oh, thank you, I feel better now.”
On business trips
“When I used to travel for business all the time I would leave a special something — a little note, small gift, etc. — for my daughter for every day that I was gone. She is a teenager now and I just did this for the first time in a while. She called to say what great memories that brings.”
“I try to take the time and really explain to my son what it is I do for work and why I need to go away. I think it really makes things easier when he understands that mommy is doing something important and that’s why she needs to go away.”
And my favorite bit of advice that I got from a working mom whose kids are now all grown up:
“Involve your kids in your work. Tell them why you are passionate about what you do, why it’s important to you. Bring them, if possible, so they can see you work. I think my kids, even when they were young, benefited so much from my doing this, from the fact that I was really honest and open about my work and why it was something I really cared about. They needed to be able to visualize what it is I do all day.”

What a great post, Nataly! My kids “help” me in our home office. They get me paper off of the printer, help me clip things together or staple…they think it’s “fun”.
