Keeping my daughter home from school...

Yesterday my daughter's preschool gave all parents notes that there was a nasty stomach virus going around - kids are out sick, with projectile vomiting and all sorts of fun things. So today I decided to keep my daughter home.

It's a tough call--I have a TON of work and today is when I get my treat with a pilates class, which I now have to skip. My mom is coming for an hour to help out, but that's just an hour. I think I need to do this for my peace of mind - who knows if she won't get sick or would have gotten sick, but boy, a real juggle now and I am sounding selfish, but man, I hate to miss that class.

I don't know if I am being silly, overprotective, or smart, but there you have it.

  • i just did the same thing last week for 3 days actually till I could really tell. I think its worth it! I don't know if she would have been sick, but I felt better about it but was also most decidedly less productive.... ah well... i miss being surrounded by a million aunts and cousins like I was growing up. When I go home (caribbean) I literally get phone calls asking when I need to go out so that my family can have time with the kid. In fact, they sometimes suggest it if I am not busy enough to provide the whole clan with adequate opportunity.... my sister lives there and gets the same treatment so I know its not just because they don't see me often. I miss that...

  • Bummer about the class! Did she end up getting sick or was it all okay? How was the juggle?

  • I'd say you're being prudent, As Mandy mentioned, if your daughter gets sick, that will take a much bigger chunk of your time than keeping her out of school for the day. And if you can take that hour while your mom's there for some "me" time instead of work, that could be a good thing.

  • You're not being selfish or silly! You are being proactive -- and you are being a good mother!

  • I think it has to be your decision as a parent. NIcholas has been sick for the last month or so with colds and things that he brings home from daycare. I would love to keep him home but still am not supposed to be lifting so I can't. I think you have made a good decision though. When your child is sick it is even harder on you than just having them home and well for a couple of days.

  • Thanks guys, you've made me feel better -- I hope that the bug vibes are all out of her school by Monday!

  • You're not silly. I would have done the same thing. You don't want to risk her getting sick and when you'll really be missing a lot with your work. Better safe than sorry.

  • You are not being selfish! That class is something you count on to help you get through your week. The great thing here though, is that if you've managed to keep her from getting the bug by keeping her home you're saving yourself hours in nursing time. Not to mention saving yourself and hubby from getting it, too. I just posted a note about breathing so guess what I'm going to tell you to do today?!!? Good luck, Nataly. Oh, and is there any chance you can use the hour you mom is there for yourself? To do your own workout. Plus if your daughter isn't sick you can always go out for a walk with her!
