Work might make me crazy, I just needed to rant

Lately, it seems like everyone wants to beat up on me - professionally, that is. No matter what I try to do to come up, I keep getting knocked down. I have to take it as a sign that I was meant to work for myself. I'm not expecting anyone to read this rant, but I just really needed to write down my frustration so I can get back to working towards my goal.

Now, my job situation is a little complicated because although I work for a real estate agent, I am also a real estate agent - actually a licensed broker, I might add. I work for him so that I can get some kind of salary into my household and make commission from the deals of his that I close - but that commission is miniscule. He also gave me the opportunity to sell homes and make a much larger commission of which he gets a cut, too. Sounds great, but this was 4 years ago and nothing has changed no matter how hard I work or how hard I prove myself over and over again. Being that I am independant and can generate money on my own and the market is bad and he's not making as much, I came up with ways to make extra money. Unfortunately, he has a problem with it. I had been negotiating his short sale deals very, very successfully and closing several a month. Anyone that knows short sales knows that they are the most difficult thing in the universe and require a ton of negotiating, fighting and paperwork - but i was crazy good at it. I had a meeting with him where I discussed with him that I wanted to charge a short sale processing fee - not to him, but to the bank and if the bank wouldn't pay, we'd ask the buyer to pay. If no one would pay then, oh well, but at least I would try and I know that many other agents and title companies are doing it so it can be done. Since this wouldn't cost him a dime, I didn't imagine that there would be a problem with it. His response? "If it's too hard we'll just give the short sales to someone else." I explained that I am not saying that they are hard and I don't want to negotiate them, I just feel that we can make extra money - as I would even give him a cut - and it wouldn't cost him a dime. He decided that if I wanted to make more money, he would give the short sales to a title company to negotiate them and free up my time to show more houses. Its been about a year since this happened and we went from closing 3-4 short sales a month to closing 3-4 total for the past year since he took them away. None of the companies we've tried are any good and they can't seem to get them closed. I have pointed out this severe loss in profit and how we should take them back and try to collect a fee and he said that they are too much work for me! I was actually making him more money by getting these short sales closed then by running around closing a couple of deals here and there so it makes no sense!!

  • Sounds like you're doing the right thing. My ex worked for 10 years in sales at a firm like you were describing. And at the end they just folded the company when they retired and gave him, the top seller, 2 week severance package. Crazy out there sometimes.
