A TRIP TO THE DENTIST | ISABELLA’S HOME AWAY FROM HOME

I say it all the time, if I worked every day for the rest of my life I’m not sure I could ever repay my mother for all the money she spent at the dentist on my behalf all the years I was growing up. My teeth were horrible – cavities, root canal, extractions, braces twice, permanent retainers, you name it – I’ve had it. At least my problems seem to be from my youth – pretty much gone now – except for the gum problems of late. Keith doesn’t fair much better – he is forever getting a crown, filling, root canal, etc.

So we weren’t too surprised when Isabella seemed to be a dental carbon copy of her parents. The last year has been full of dental visits – at last it seemed that we were in the clear. Isabella has been so diligent and really has been great about not eating chewy things. Then I brought Saltwater Taffy home from Boston. I offered her a piece (why, I don’t know – what is wrong with me?) and within 20 seconds she was holding her spacer (attached to a piece of taffy) from the back of her mouth.

Off to the dentist we go!

The bad news is that our dentist is almost an hour away. The good news is that our kids love the dentist! When we moved to Scottsdale, we tried the pediatric dentist that was ranked #1 by Phoenix Magazine. My kids screamed their heads off. Hated the place. So back we went to the best Pediatric dentist in the Valley (in our family’s poll) – Hilgers Pediatric Dentistry in Goodyear.

I can’t say enough good things about this dentist. It is such a relief as a mom to take your children to the dentist and have no apprehension – I don’t even have to go back with them. They actually enjoy the dentist. They leave with a smile on their face, a ballon tied to their wrist and an adorable prize from the treasure chest. Well I guess not always with a smile if you look below at the picture of Isabella, she happens to have gauze jammed in her mouth – she smiled later!

An hours drive is a small price to pay!

  • We'll be taking my son (4) to the dentist for the first time this summer probably. I hope we didn't wait too long and we have as good an experience as you. Do you have any tips on oral health? I can relate to the taffy story. I did come across this Mom's Guide recently (you can check it out at this link or copy and paste in your browser - http://www.1dental.com/moms-guide/). It had a bunch of practical tips for kids of all ages.
