Writing - or iow, how the muse left and I don't know where she is........

I used to be able to write.  About 10 years ago, I stumbled across something on the 'net while doing some personal research.  It's a genre called "fan fiction."  It's where a person writes about a book, a movie, a TV show, that they've read and want to take it further than the author or writers did.  In my case, it deals with an old 1960s sci-fi show called "Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea."  It was playing on TV one day and we'd just gotten conntected to the net, so I popped the words into word search and up comes several sites that fans had made.  I couldn't believe it.

Ultimately, I found a few sites that had stories on them about the characters in the old show.  Considering not much was done back in the 60s as far as tie-ins (books, comics, etc), it was interesting to see what this was all about.  It led me to what's called "printzines" and webzines.  (I run my own website with another lady).  Anyway, I decided one day to try my hand at writing.  Now, mind you, the only writing I'd ever done was legalistic in nature - memos, briefs, research.  To suddenly come up with what turned out to be >80 pages of a story and THEN have it turn into a trilogy, only to have it snowball into a partnership with a  "sister" I found, and write erotica - jeez!  (BTW, that's not as easy to do as one thinks).

Anyway, right now, the muse has left and I can't get her back.  I keep printing off ideas as I find them, stories from the news cause we updated and modernized the original storyline.  I just want to find some time for myself to get back into writing.  I need to.  I want to.  I have to.

Problem is..........right now, there's no time.

And I'm bummed as hell.

  • I did something like that a few years ago and the result was my very first piece of erotica Actually, I did it on a dare. LOL Lo and behold, it actually turned out better than I thought.

You're absolutely right, of course. However, nowadays, I just can't seem to find 10 minutes without something going on or even when I do, my mind just even in it. Maybe it's got more to do with setting than anything else right now. At this point, I'm seriously considering activating the speech tool on MS Word and dictating whatever comes into my mind. I've never used it and don't know how it'd do, but if it can get me out of this rut...I'm willing to try.

  • I took a writing course once and the instructor asked us to just free-write for 10 minutes, no topic, no thesis, no idea where it was going. I found it kind of liberating. Maybe something to try as a fun break?

  • I really want to get back into writing, for a variety of reasons. I got into it as kind of a carthesis for dealing my parents' illnesses and subsequent deaths. Found I liked doing it 'cause it really made me stretch my imagination. Add to the fact, doing the research for some of the stuff has taken me places I NEVER thought I'd ever be - like touring 2 nuclear submarines - becoming friends with the living actors from the old show. (One of them my family has "adopted" as a pseudo-grandfather cause he literally has no family left and he's 75+).

I swear, I'm going to take some time to myself and go rent a room at the Beach for about 3 or 4 days. Hubby can fend for himself, as can daughter. I just need the scenery to get me back into the mood. If I stay home, there's too much to do here and the writing won't get done.

  • So sorry to hear that you're bummed. I often feel like I don't get the time (or at least enough time) to do what I really want to do. I feel your pain, and hope that you get a window of opportunity soon!!!
