Cleaning out the younger toys...GREAT SALES may even give me some more room in my house!

OK, I admit it. My 7 year old is a horder. I am an enabler. But not anymore! I hope.

He's got me on the stuffed animal thing (owns at least 30) but at least he's not getting any more,

I finally convinced him, without having to bribe him, that it was time to let go of the things he doesn't play with to make room for the new things he can play with.

Soon to be rid of:

Thomas the tank engine: $600 worth, should give you an idea of how much I have! Selling it for a great price and why? Because I have gone all zen with my vision of my life (today).

Phonics stuff and easy readers. The kid's reading Narnia, for God's sake, he doesn't need this stuff anymore.

And I am hoping to get rid of the biggest time sucker of all: GEO TRAX. These are great when your kid is into them, because they are relatively inexpensive and you can get lots of it as presents for birthdays and such. The down side: They are freakin' HUGE. I have friends who swear they are picking them up in March.

Next project: His entire bookshelves. Yup, it's plural. And when can I get rid of the animals? Probably never. He knows when any one of them is missing.

But Never say Never, he did eventually give up sucking on his blanket every night.

Now I need help organizing his artwork and school stuff.

It's endless....

But I am digging in and going for it! Cheer me on, get inspired too!

  • i agree, I have a bjillion books, some are repeats and I am a teacher... so I can pass some along. Thanks for the comment though. We still have board books, and best of all, we have books from when we were kids, and even some from when our parents were kids!

  • Be cautious about getting rid of books. Even when kids are reading at high levels, they'll go back and read their favorite picture books for fun -- and they should. Good readers who are highly visual will also read "easier" books just for pleasure.

  • If only we had a basement. Or an attic! I live in the Bay Area, where these old houses have NO storage. We do have a small storage unit in Oakland, where the must keeps end up :)

  • I need to go through my stepdaughter's bookshelf too. There's lots of easier reader level 1 books up there and she's reading at a 4th grade level according to the reading assessment test at school (and she's in 2nd grade)! Some of them will probably just get stored in the basement on another bookshelf, things that I want to keep for when I eventually have children.
