The political issue I would really like to see better addressed is....................

While I feel the need to be socially accepted and say the war in Iraq, My real issue is heathcare. I have great insurance. No real problems. The problem I have is that people like my parents, who don't have health insurance available to them through their jobs, an unable to obtain healthcare. My mother had knee surgery a couple of years ago, and developed blood clots. since then, her health has spiraled downhill. She is now on Coumadin (sp??) for the rest of her life, has to go and have labs done every 3 weeks, and has developed some other health issues. She CAN'T get health insurance at all, even though she can afford to pay for it, because she has preexisting conditions. My stepfather had an issue with his prostate, and even though the doctors have cleared him, and given him a clean bill of health, he still got denied.

The medial bills have eaten up all of their savings, so they have nothing left for retirement.

I've checked into the discount plans available, like Ameriplan, and there are no providers in their area. They are stuck.

While I don't believe there should be a federal health care plan, I would like to see some rules established that say that insurance carriers can't deny you if you can afford the premiums. There should be options available if you need or want them, and there really aren't any, unless you are lucky enough to have a job with a decent plan.

My mother is self employed, and my step dad works in a different state from the one he lives in, so his work insurance canceled him because he didn't reside in the state the policy was held in, he lives 4 miles over the state line. (instead of having a company wide policy, his employer was paying for individual policies since his company is so small.)

My father actually works for a LARGE company, and they just switched plans on their employees to save the company money, and it doesn't cover hardly anything. It sucks.

I don't have an idea how to fix it. I have heard all the candidates' plans, and I really don't like their ideas either.

  • Oh my. I'm speechless from both stories posted so far. Makes me feel enormously vulnerable. There but for the grace of God go I. - Paula.

  • There needs to be more accountability with our insurance companies to, we had a baby born very early in 2005, he racked up over 300,000. in medical bills, I had a little over 100,000. We have excellent insurance but you have to have a lot of energy to "dance around" with them. Ultimately we ended up with 22,000. that we had to pay because our insurance company declared charges were excessive, then in 2006 that samelittle boy was running across the living room and fell into the desk, smacked right in the middle of his forehead, an ambulance ride and 13 stitches later I was ready for a drink! I am still fighting with my insurance company over the ambulance ride, they decided in all their knowledge that it wasn't necessary. Head wound, 2 years old???? The ambulance driver and medic both gave us statements for our appeal, the hospital elected to not get involved. We pay a lot of money for our insurance, we have a hefty out of pocket each year, until 2005 we never had any real problems, like I said they like to "dance" they send you papers to fill out because they want an explanation and then they send it back because they want something clarified, that I can handle, but denying an ambulance ride has me a bit upset.
I could go all day about healthcare, we have distant relation that is on state medical and they use it, they are young and lazy. We have a 43 year old neighbor that is a single mom with 4 kids she works hard, she was able to get the state insurance for her children only, then last year they decided she made enough money for a premium, she missed a payment in January (Christmas, Heat bill) and she now has lost her insurance, she has called and called and can't get anywhere. I was dumfounded. So she has decided to cut her hours at work so she will meet the requirements for state aid. That is so sad. I agree there needs to be something available for everyone. (I didn't intend this to be so long.)
