My favorite (and forgotten) hobby

I used to love to paint. I am not that great at it -- OK, I am not good at it at all -- but I used to just love to get large canvases, fun textures, gels and paints, and paint away. When I was in college I lived in Japan and studied Japanese ink painting there -- I LOVED spending hours grinding up the paint, sitting on my knees, listening to music. (It was the closest I've come to meditating...)

Unfortunately I spend no time on these hobbies now... I do have a silly hobby, which is collecting great notebooks and writing pads. I can spend hours (and too much money!) at a stationary store and I have all the different notebooks for different things -- personal to-dos, work, etc.

  • Oh yeah, I majored in Art in College, and I have not picked up a paintbrush in years! Or any of my drawing stuff for a serious art pic. But I teach my son to draw, and he's starting to do well. I guess that is something. My passion is knitting now. I have put a cap on practically all my family member's heads, and I'm moving to socks. I love little portable projects.

  • Everytime I get a little notebook, my son takes it and fills it up with his little drawings and words that he's learning, but I know what you mean about them..they are portable, and I've bought some very attractive notepads over the years that I have not even used I like them so much and keep thinking that I should put something special on them, that is, until my son found them. Now I have something special on each one.

  • I LOVE painting. I am awful at it, no talent really at all, but I minored in art in college, just because I enjoyed taking the classes so much.

Funny thing, I love buying paper too. My kids and I recently made a bunch of great handmade papers out of old bills and scraps that had been piling up on the desk. We had the best time, and the papers came out so pretty.

I guess I am best at the computer and logistical thoughts.

  • Caramelsugarberry38 -- I went to a liberal arts college, and studied economics in Japan -- but took this class as an elective and loved it!!!!

MamaLia -- I really miss it too and I guess you could say my hobby now is cooking:)

Niki - I know, I need to refocus... somehow.

  • It's taken me a long time to pick up some hobbies that I had neglected, gardening, sewing and knitting. I was so busy with the girls I didn't make time for it. Now that they're a little bigger it's easier, and they are getting interested in them also.
You should find time to get back into it.

  • I know EXACTLY what you mean. I used to paint. Well, 8 years of art. And I miss it so much. Now my hobby is changing diapers.

  • What college did you attend that brought you to study Japanese ink painting? Was art your major? That's very unique.

My mother was a very talented painter and sculpture. I am not very talented that way, but appreciate good art anyday.

Never give up your first love. Keep trying to go back to painting. My mother gave it up and shouldn't have. She died in 2006 very suddenly. Sometimes we don't get a second chance to follow our first love.

Would love to see some of your art.
