Unsettling, surreal moment

I had a surreal moment this AM.  There's a courthouse I drive past on my way to work, not far from home, and people who have cases or jury duty are usually milling in front before it opens.  When I drove past it this morning, I saw a man on the steps of the courthouse wearing what I swear is one my jackets.  It's a very casual jacket, sort of athletic-wear, very distinctive due to its logos (no, not your usual universal sportswear logos) and color scheme, so I'm highly highly dubious that it was just another jacket that looked like mine.  Right after that realization, it occurred to me I have not noticed that jacket in our front closet lately.  In the next second, I felt this really intense sense of violation, that this guy either swiped my jacket somehow or I may have somehow dropped it (I can understand dropping gloves or keys, but a jacket??) or left it somewhere.  Ugh.  That was a terrible feeling.  And I'm going to do something I don't like to do -- stereotype -- and say that this guy looked more like a suspect than a juror.  Well, not much I can do about the lost jacket, and I'm sad that it's gone.  Oh sure, it's possible that that was not my jacket, and my jacket is still in the closet, but I seriously seriously doubt that.  Ugh.  Ugh ugh ugh.  Stress level up a few notches, the surge of feeling that life is out of control.  Yeah, I know...over a stupid jacket!  I know it seems silly, but I can't help it.   - Paula.

  • I think you got a realistic handle on this Paula. Not a good feeling if he took it from you, true, but like you said there is the possibility it may not have been your jacket. Until I looked in the closet again and searched all over - I would let it go and focus on the fact that maybe I left it somewhere or it just got lost in the house. No need to borrow worry and anxiety when it may not be warranted. If we constantly re-play unsubstantiated negativity in our minds it seeps into our subconsciousness and allows the universe to perpetuate that reality. Not something I think you want to do. Keep focused on the positive and keep moving forward.

  • Iam so sorry .... It's okay to speak on how you feel, of course you gonna feel violated but you know my method of thinking when things like this happens is God see's everything he'll get his.

  • Exactly what Victoria said, it's not about the JACKET, it's the violation of privacy and personal belongings. This is why I have a hard time inviting people to my house. I know that if I go somewhere, myself and my daughter will be respectful of their belongings, but who's to say they will be with mine? I get really offended if someone blatantly disregards my things (no matter what they are, it's not theirs so show respect!) or my house. It's hard to say how he could've coincidentally been in the same town as you wearing the exact same jacket you have/had or how he got it. I would've been feeling the same way.

  • I totally know what you mean... No, it's not about the jacket, it's about the feeling of being violated... It's terrible and it's so hard to get over it... I tend to obsess about things like that for a few days! Totally bummer... sorry this is how you started your day :(
