When life hands you lemons...

We visited my inlaws this weekend. Every time we do this I walk away thinking "If I approach things like X next time, the stress will not get to me" and whether I do that thing or not, the stress nearly always gets to me. My MIL is a little hard to swallow for anyone, but for a relatively new mom she can be downright impossible.

With dear MIL, there are two things you can count on every visit.

First, she's probably going out of town the following week. They travel constantly and she can't stay in one place for a long time.

Second, she probably just went to Sam's Club even though she is leaving in two days. Therefore her refrigerator is guaranteed PACKED with food they'll never eat. So begins the game of getting out of the house without too much extra food that we'll never eat.

These two guarantees held true for us this weekend and we did make it out with only a few items from the refrigerator. One such item was a five pound bag of lemons. I guess I'd better go make some lemonade.

  • My BFF related the story of when she and her husband cleaned out his mom's house after she died. Her FIL was an undertaker. They found a whole closet full of hats, never used. They found CASES of saurkraut, bought "because it was on sale," (but NO ONE would eat it, but you never knew about company... ) I can go on and on...

Sounds like your MIL needs a life. BAD.

  • Great suggestions! LOL

It's not the fear of running out that is my MIL's prob. It's the joy of buying. She's one of those people with closets full of random "must haves" and she's notorious for just buying and buying (I think she's bored). It extends beyond Sam's too, for instance, we have received (in just one year) three different themed sets of towels for my sons bathroom because she just thought they were too cute. Multiply that by 10 grandkids and I think she keeps Homegoods in business by herself...

  • Brenda,
You could also bake some fish and use the lemon with it .

Oh, and what about using them to refreshen your garbage disposer? LOL

Seriously, I know what you mean. In my parents' mind, you HAD to stock up cause you didn't know what would happen down the road. After they died and I was cleaning out the house, I came across 3 BIG packs of paper plates and oodles and oodles of plastic forks, spoons, and knives, as well as plastic cups. Because they lived in a rural area (and the nearest Sams was 2 hr away), they'd stock up everytime they went in. Problem was, they'd forget what they already have and pick up the same things. :-D
