The Spirited Child in Action

My son is just over 14 months old and I think we can safely say he's "spirited." I like that term over difficult. Mostly because I think he comes by his temperament quite honestly (mommy blushes slightly here). This makes us like two bulls in a china closet fighting over the gravy dish sometimes, which is where we were about 4 hours into our holiday weekend yesterday!

Didn't help that it rained all day on what is supposed to be the epitimal play outside day. Nor does it help that this was his first full week in the chaotic toddler room. Fewer nap hours, more active play, lots of stimulation. Ai yi yi!

So by mid-afternoon we decided to get out of the house. Mommy voted for Barnes & Noble, selfishly. Daddy and Jack played with the train table in the children's area while I methodically read the back of at least 30 parenting books.  Finally settled on Being the Parent You Want to Be--maybe it's about me after all--and The NEW Strong-Willed Child--sounds about right.

And, there was no buyers remorse on these. Jack decided to throw a tantrum over being in his stroller throughout our entire check-out process. Maybe I should have gotten the audio version for the drive home.

  • Ugh. Checkout tantrums. Remember pre-kids when you could browse the books, coffee in hand, at B&N for as long as you wanted?? Sigh...

  • My 6 year old is a srong willed one. I can recall many tantrums in the checkout, getting thrown out of daycare and the fact that she screamed until she was ummm...4. Dobson's book is a huge encouragement, I read about once a year to stay sane. Hang in there!
