Warning - it's not all as good or bad as you think (long)
my granddad is in the hospital with a head injury that required brain surgery this past weekend. he was riding his motorcycle and tagged the bumper of a car at about 5mph. yup. he's 85 and rides motorcycles! He is in better shape than i ever have been! The only reason he didnt walk away from it? he was taking too much of a blood thinner (had bypass surgery about 8 months ago) so the bump on his head kept bleeding inside. Now he is in a coma and family is gathering. We all just expect him to wake up and ask what the hell all this crap is that is strapped to him!
so why do doctors say things like 'eh, he's 85, chances are he wont wake up, the recovery rate is only 30%' but they dont even take into account that he is physically healthier than most, regardless of age. he takes care of a house on 8 acres of cleared land (that he mows), he golfs about 3 days a week or more (no cart), etc. annoying. maybe it doesnt matter medically, but it seriously frustrates the family.
so that's where i am, have been and will be the next few days as we figure out his prognosis. it's hard to waffle between terminal and 100% recovery. but i am going to push him to recover! did i mention he was a test pilot in the navy? yeah, he has survived MUCH worse than this!!
