Coffee is not a bedtime drink

Today was a good day. But why don't I have the discipline my husband has? I got up early but was too distracted to make coffee, so I had my daily coffee at 3pm... and I'm finishing it off now at 9pm. Mmm, and to make it worse, I was so tuckered (without my coffee) that I napped at lunchtime. It just feels so "right" to enjoy a cup of coffee at least once a day, so I couldn't say no. But I'm hoping I won't be lying awake at 2am, too jazzed to sleep.

  • Thanks for your comments, guys! What do you know? I slept okay despite all the caffeine. Maybe I was just exhausted by that time!!

  • Hi Diane,
Funny you mentioned this ... I guess you and I could make a 24:7 team if we both have coffee at the same time: you'd be up all night and I'd be asleep almost immediately. ha ha ha!
Few days ago I told a colleague of mine - I was supposed to have a coffee with at 10:30 am - that we need to hurry up for I need my coffee to calm down (I was already very agitated from not having coffee before 10:30 am). So, you can imagine the rest.

  • I don't drink coffee, but caffene puts myself and my 2 daughters asleep. We don't know why but it has the opposite affect on us. When I was in college I could drink 2 cans of mountain dew and then go to bed and sleep. Stress is what keeps me awake, not caffene.

  • Ooh. I'd be up all night if I had coffee that late - even decaf, which has just a smidge of caffeine. Sometimes even a dark chocolate bar will keep me up.

Sleep is really important to me. Hope you're more awake today.

  • I agree completely! For me, it's very important to keep a regular sleep schedule. I try hard to go to sleep at the same time every night, and wake up at the same time every morning. At night, I always sit in my comfy couch and read something until I get drowsy. Steady sleep helps me stay alert at work and not need to take naps. And I think it's just good for mental health. So I've been very careful not to drink caffinated coffee in the evening. I've also had to give up alcohol completely, even though I love white wine, because even one glass makes me drowsy and then it's hard to get to sleep at the right time. Maybe I'm being a bit of a fanatic about this -- I'm not particularly a healty-life-style person and I badly need to diet -- but I find it's worth it.

  • I think we must be sisters - I am right there with you. It is just "right" to have coffee every day! Did you sleep? I've gotten to where coffee is one of my favorite bedtime drinks - it's about the "ahhhhhh" when I drink it, more than the coffee buzz!!!
