Change... is good?

We're considering changing daycares for our 17-month old son. Just typing those words makes me sick to my stomach. I don't know why. I manage multi-million dollar communications budgets on behalf of clients. I ski and rock climb and clean up baby poop daily. But choosing  daycare providers has been so ridiculously hard for me. It's even harder in this case because nothing is actually wrong with his current daycare.

Let's back up. We started out with a nanny when I went back to work. That didn't work out. There were lies and distrust from day one, not to mention the mad-dash home to relieve the nanny by 6 pm. So, we found a daycare close to my office that we really liked and he's been in their good hands for just over a year. The infant room was delightful and the director has taken quite a liking to my little toe-head and he often runs up to her office on the way in or out of the building to say hi.

So why change? Well, a shiny new facility opened up just down the street. They have fresh paint and clean floors plus all new equipment, computer classes, and an on-site chef (veggie lasagna for lunch? can I come?), but most importantly, the teachers all have at least a bachelors' degree. The toddler teacher is currently working on her masters in child development (vs. a super nice, but seemingly worn out toddler teacher who looks like she'd rather be home in bed most days than chasing after my little runner). Combine that with the fact that we know other families who have been wooed by this new daycare on the block and are very happy with it.

It all adds up and we won't likely regret it or anything, but I still feel kinda queezy from all the questions going through my head, especially the one that goes something like "Will any care provider ever be good enough for my little boy?" Unfortunately, I think I know the answer to that one...

  • Thanks for the supportive comments, ladies. They make me feel much better about the decision. I totally agree that education is not the only factor. However, I've heard really good stories so far about mom's watching (before making their presence known) the interactions at the new facility and they are really good with the kids.

  • I will say that when my son was a newborn, I chose the home daycare facility run by a woman with a bachelors degree in biochemistry and 2nd one in early childhood education. She looked great on paper, but I did not care for her at all once we started. She was lousy with kids and not really nice. On the flip side, my older son was in a La Petite with AWESOME highly educated workers, due to being in a college town with few jobs for the wives of profs & grad students : ) So, I guess my point is that as long as your educated teachers are loving, too, choose them, but otherwise, don't be blinded by their credentials. . .even jerks can pass early childhood courses.

  • Oh, I manage to completely stress out about child care changes, too. I'll make spreadsheets and pro/con lists and overthink it. And you know what? I've always ended up following through on my initial thought to move the kids and it has always ended up being a good thing. You know what is best for your boy...and it sounds like you have some very good reasons for the move. Good luck!

  • I can completely relate -- I managed multi-million dollar investments but almost killed myself through angst every time we had to make a change in childcare for our daughter.:)

It seems like you know this, but your reasons for changing sound really solid. I'd also offer up that I think at 17 months the change will probably be harder on you than your kiddo!:)
