It has been more than 7 years since I applied for a job. I'm so lucky in that -- I have been with this company since I was in college as an intern. It has seen me through my wedding, the births of both my kids... the company even threw me a farewell party when I left them in 1999, only to welcome me back a year later when I realized what a mistake leaving had been.

But now... circumstances have changed. I'm no longer a recent grad with all the time in the world to commute, to travel, to... commute. I need something closer to our home-base, that will be more flexible since my oldest son starts Kindergarten next year. What I really need is a part-time gig; what I applied for this morning is not that, but it's a first step into The Job Search. I know I'm lucky to begin searching while I still HAVE a job.

I'm nervous. I don't remember how to do interviews. I don't know when's the right time to ask about salary and schedules, or how in the heck to negotiate a salary. I received an auto-response from the Human Resources Office saying they had gotten my email, and NO CALLS, PLEASE. What if they don't want to interview me?

...What if they do??

  • Wishing you all the best in your job search. The general rule of thumb is for every 100 sent out you get an interview. There are many sources to brush up on your interviewing tech. and neg. salary. I have had people ask what the salary range is during the first interview. You do not want to waste the employers time nor your time if they are not even in the range. But keep in mind to look at the whole package. Please feel free to ask me any questions. i will do my best to get you some answers
