The 2 Hour Yard Sale

Last night I made $500 in just 2 hours!  I work for a vehicle auction as a title clerk, so auctions are pretty standard for me.  However, must people relate auctions to repossessed homes and vehicles.  I have a friend who works at antique auctions who opened up a miscellaneous sale.  Yesterday morning, my husband and I loaded up a bunch of junk from our garage, a large closet in the basement and toys the kids have outgrown.  We had a trailer full of stuff to auction off to help my friend jump start her new sale.  We went in with the attitude that everything must go no matter what price it brings.  The intintion was to create an exciting atmosphere full of great deals for my friend's customers.  We wanted everyone to buzz about her new auction and be excited about coming back.  We had a blast and made $500 in the process.  Plus, we don't miss a thing that we let go.  Some things made me cringe a little when the went for a low price.  We sold a hockey table for $15 and a 35mm camera for $27.  Then, two men started a battle over an ugly green wine bottle with a strand of twinkle lights in it with Georgia Bulldog stickers on the outside left over from my husband's dorm room.  The thing was absolutly UGLY.  It sold for $12!  I will never sit outside on a rainy Saturday or a scorching hot weekend praying for cars to stop at my yard sale again.  So gather up your stuff.  Find a local auction and make some MONEY!!!

  • Great idea...I've never thought of that. I'll have to investigate.

  • It's usually a win- win thing...you get rid of things you don't want and or need. And they find a new home where they can be of use or just liked by someone else. Who usually feels really good getting this great deal. So making alot of people happy...not bad for two hours of work. Glad you had fun..made alittle money and helped others all in a very short time. Wish you lived by me...I'd come to your yard sale. :)

  • I love the cash generated by garage sales, but I often wonder if they are worth the time sitting in the hot sun and the many hours spent marking prices on things. It sounds like the auctions would be the way to go!!!

  • Garage sales are definitely a great way to score some cash. I know *I* can't resist stopping at any garage sale I see...even when times are tight. There's always something the kids like, a couple of books for me, which make me so happy, and a knickknack for the house. Usually under $5 bucks, we leave happy and the sellers are thrilled that someone's taken their junk away and paid for the privilege! Good for you guys!
